I don't think any of Latin America is doing much better. I went two years ago and people seemed happy at the small changes Raul was making, but with the embargo and the way the world economy is right now, an isolated island with limited productive capabilities can only do so much to keep their population afloat. Cooperatives, small-time farming, and other changes are helping the system maintain itself. If the revolution reverses, Cuba would just get whored out like Puerto Rico or the DR. The bureaucracy has a lot to be blamed for but hopefully a happy medium can be found with the embargo lifted and they can keep the good with the bad and move forward with pro boxing. I have no doubt Cuba would be a MAJOR force in boxing were professional sports allowed.

i know you are joking but a lot of it is also true, if they opened the chance for their boxers to fight professionals they will do great but if along with the pro boxing comes the western living lifestyle then along will come laziness, fatness, dumbness, drugs, and a lot of other things that will diminish the talent pool

Imagine if PR and cuba had the population of China or India??!

They would DOMINATE. I'm talking 8 champions per weight class. Their boxers would pretty much own all of the belts per weight class, I'm talking WBC, wbo, wba, wbu, ibo, iba, ibf, IBM, WWE, WWF, WCW, UFC, AAA and any other belt I might have missed. Oh the humanity.

The u.s. and mexicrap would GET SMOKED.

The only 2 good Euro fighters are the Bitchkos, and they're from the same family. Only one or two Euro champs from 160 up who are from Eatern Block Euro countries. Hardly a massive influx of Euro fighters taking over.

It would be the same with Cuba. Half the reason they dominate the ams is cos they have guys with 10 years international experience fighting teenage novices. The great few would still be great, but if they went pro, many of them would not be as successful.

Cuba worse enemy is its own system, believe me,not trying to do politics here. But the system is so inefficient that scares the **** out of me.The whole infrastructure is falling apart because is a chaos over there.I don't judge other countries.Blaming USA is a generalized sport among latinamerican countries.
Cuba always been and will be a force in boxing,no matter politics.

Great points but let me clarify something for you and everyone else. Cuba is way above Puerto Rico in both Boxing and Baseball, and we can continue and go to track and field, men and women volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, table tennis, karate, taek won do, etc etc etc.

Cuba is the #1 Spanish speaking Country with the most Gold medals in the Olympics, World Championships, PanAm Games, Goodwill Games you name it. Puerto Rico doesn't even come close to Cuba in most events, not just boxing and that's a fact, same as Mexico.

Don't misunderstand me as both PR and Mex have produced many and wonderful athletes ( boxers included ) but Cuba has been MIA ( missing in action ) from professional sports since 1959.

While PR has achieved about 60 professional boxing World Champs compared to Cuba's merely 13 ( 6 before Castro and 6 after Castro including the present ones ) this is no surprise to anyone that has any common sense. PR and Mex have a huge lead on Cuba ( in the pros ) as the Cubans have been banned from pro sports since 1959 ( about 51 years! ) while the PR's and Mexs have been enjoying and having all the fun with their free systems.

But Cuba is the absolute clear Champion in almost all events compared to PR and Mex. What makes people think that Cuba can't repeat the same if given the oportunity in the pros like the PR and the Mexs have for such a long time?

The Cubans breathe Baseball and Boxing, not just now but since the days of Kid Chocolate and Napoles, when they were a super force in professional Baseball and Boxing. And what's their secret?

Huge passion, excellent sports schools and a huge Afro-Cuban population!

Stfu you **** , you don't need to live near the USA to do well in boxing , boxing is the oldest sport in the world , people've been punching each other since the begining of time and Cuba has sent a lot of Trainers to those countries to help them stablish their schools . Peace .

It's already a given that Cuba is a boxing powerhouse.

However, like every country there will be laws of average.

Their greatness in amateur level might be compromised once everyone gets a chance to turn pro and make money. Sure, the amateur system in cuba has been established, but once there's no talent staying to ply their trade, the training system won't mean squat. Another thing, the great coaches and trainers would probably migrate to professional training too.

And on the other hand, there's already more than a handful of cuban pro's back in the 90's and only Casamayor and Gomez had success.

Everyone else faltered one way or another. Garbey, Ledon, Gonzales etc.

So it's not like every great amateur will be a great pro in anyway.
