If Lennox had 1-2 more rounds, Vitali would be wearing an eye patch today.

Lennox retiring was the best thing that ever happened to Vitali

I hate when this is used as an excuse, both guys were training for fights against other guys, it wasn't like Lewis was nearing the end of his camp and then Vitali was called into action having no training. Both fighters were equally disadvantaged by their scheduled fights changing.

Jack Dempsey for one, he went about 3 years without defending his title.

    Now here's a man with a brain.

    Obviously both were equally disadvantaged.

That said, no champion has ever defended his title with such sort notice with respect to who he would be fighting.

Not true at all. Lewis had talked about retiring even before he fought Tyson. Guess you didn't follow him much back then.

And as far as the sport being killed, it can hardly be blamed in whether or not there was a rematch between Lewis/Vitali.

Mayweather and pac going through a 3-4 year dance to avoid each other hurts the sport far more. Hell Bowe ducking Lewis even hurt the sport more. People want to see the best fights out there, and while rematches are nice, nothing really was owed to Vitali in terms of a rematch. When a fighter steps into the ring against a champion they know going in they're likely to only get one shot at it. And during the fight Vitali had to know it was going to be stopped at some point so he knew since the third round he was living on borrowed time and he only had a few rounds to get the job done. He didn't do it, and the fight was stopped end of story. Besides the stoppage wasn't all that controversial as far as boxing stoppages go.

Old Lennox 'Lets just retire' Lewis looked A HELL OF A LOT more worn out at the end of that 6th :hey I think it was Vitali who needed just 1-2 more rounds. Another stiff right hand and Lewis would have been on his back.

I think you can judge who had the upper hand by watching the last 20-30 seconds of the 6th. That tells the whole story about what would have happened had the fight continued.

    exactly

not to mention 50% of press row and boxing writers

had the fight 3-3.. So that moronic statement of vitali dominating the fight

    is ****ing outrageous

    LOL!!!!

we all know that even if the fight wasn't stopped Lewis was outboxing the **** out of him by round 6 after figuring him out and the KO was coming. How many times has Lewis been down on the cards after 6 rounds only to figure an opponent out and proceed to take over....more than I can count off top. That's all that happened here, the fight was swinging Lewis's way and he was on his way to whupping Vitali regardless of ripping his face of with punches.

    Lewis beat ATG's

Vitali has never even beaten a top 50 ATG heavyweight

Lewis was old and fat and training for someone completely different stylistically in Johnson......and Vitali was peaking!!

Imagine this version of Vitali vs the Lewis from Holyfield 1!!! It would have been a massacre KO win for Lewis.

10 years from now no one will even remember the names of any of Vitali's best wins and they'll be able to rattle off at least 5 of Lewis'....that says it all really

Remember Vitali won two rounds clearly mate.

This says quite a lot for Evander.

You can't stop a healthy Holyfield with a Sledgehammer. :deal

My thoughts exactly. The second frame shows thumbing pretty clear.
