    Here's a 100% true Dempsey tale because it's my own ... I work down the block from where Dempsey had his famous restaurant on Broadway ... the intersection interestingly enough these days is called Dempsey Ave at Dempsey St. One day a few summers ago I walked by the building and felt nostalgic so I went into the lobby just to gets a feel for the place ... it was a very hot summer Friday and an older gentleman was working the lobby and we started to chat .. I asked him about this being the site of the restaurant and this older man, in his early seventies at the time , lit up ... he started telling me all about the restaurant , saying hue worked the building for over forty five years ... he then went on to tell me about Dempsey with pure joy in his eyes ... he said Dempsey himself would walk into the lobby at night and always made sure the night shift got food to eat ... (he obviously remembered what it was like to strapped for cash and hungry) .. he also said that well into his seventies Dempsey had ramrod posture and radiated a hardness below the surface that made him stand out from other men, let alone other men his age ... that and Dempsey had huge hands and knuckles, said his hands looked like clubs ... this he remembered so many years later ... for what it's worth I got some kick out of that first hand report ...

    Dempsey was more a combination of Frazier and Ali with his speed and footwork. Frazier was a great fighter but to downgrade Dempsey to that level is just unfair.
