No thats nonsense Rep. Ortiz put it simply is just a dumb fighter. He does stupid **** in the ring. You only have to look at his performance against Floyd and when he lost his fight vs Maidana to see how low his fighting IQ is. Look at how casual and flippant he is about his career. He has sooo many distractions outside of boxing and really doesn't take it all too seriously. Bottom line is if you have a broke jaw thats a dam good reason to stop a fight. But you're reading way too much into the rabbit punches earlier in the fight. That's just typical Ortiz. He's just plain stupid.
I had to retire in the am's courtesy of a fractured sternum and a condition called costochondritis (caused by a punch). to those who are taking the ****, providing Ortiz is telling the truth, I have little else but a big **** you message. Believe me, unless you have had such an injury, you have absolutely no idea how painful it is... excruciating doesn't come close. Imagine living a life where when you wake up in the morning, you can't even bend over to tie your shoelaces... that's how bad it can get. Cortisone injections don't do squat, and it can be a life changing condition for those who are hit with it particularly badly. For Ortiz's sake, I hope that he is one of the lucky ones that recovers fully. For those of you that still doubt me, feel free to make contact, and i'll put you in the ring with the lad that cracked me square on the sternum... see if your as hard as you all think you are.
Let's define terms here. Ortiz could have continued. He was not knocked out. Knocked out means you cannot recover your faculties/bodily control within 10 seconds and could not make a reasonable attempt to defend yourself. Ortiz may have been justified in quitting for health reasons, but it is still quitting.
funny how the same ***gots crying for extra tests for the safety of boxing and integrity of it calls a guy a quitter who is spitting gobs of thick red blood as a result of a broken jaw and being in a war for 9 rounds. a quitter and a coward would be a guy like david haye who wont go toe to toe and chased out of the ring with a pinky toe injury as well as a guy that goes 5 rounds and quits..... but he is looked at as some kind of bad ass on these boards. morons run rapid
He should have tried, he said his jaw was broken in the early stages of the 9th, he should have went back to his corner let them know the situation. Allow the corner to adjust the game plan a bit and give it one more round to see if he could adjust his game. instead he went back told his corner to stop the fight, when Garcia was trying to calm him down he signaled to the ref to stop the fight..... you can see Victor on the replay, asking reis, "Are you gonna stop it?" and as Reis waves the fight off Victor with a look of relief responded "Thank you" He should have ****ing tried, and he didnt..... I can understand calling it a day with this kind of injury but have faith in yourself and your corner for **** sakes.... I also saw Victor starting to crack mentally in there long before the jaw, as soon as he started hitting Lopez in the back of the head I knew Victor was not comfortable in there. Nobody knows if he could have continued or not, but like I stated he should have tried to that would have earned him a little more respect than what he is getting
None of that matters. There's a lot of guys making wild unsubstantiated claims here. Il ask again have you boxed? And have you ever fought with a broke jaw? I'm afraid if its no to both especially the lata then your opinion doesn't count for much. I honestly don't understand how you can berate a fighter for having a broke jaw. :huh
I have boxed yes, Not Pro, Amateur, have I fought with a broken Jaw? No I have been hit in which I felt that my jaw was broken **** swelled up like a tennis ball on the side of my face. Lost but still fought. I am sorry kid, but Victor ****ed up here, he should have went back to his corner and explained to his corner the situation and at least try that didnt happen, he deserves what he gets
Then you should have the empathy to understand what Ortiz is/was going through. A broken jaw cannot be construed under any circumstance as quitting in a sport as brutal as boxing. That said Ortiz clearly needs to go back to the drawing board and consider if he wants to be in this sport.
What about defining terms is hard to understand. He jumped up off his stool to get the ref's attention to stop the fight. Clearly not "knocked out". Also, pretty much by definition you aren't going to be declared knocked out sitting on your stool between rounds.
Again, you are either knocked out or you quit. Again, I'm not judging whether he was justified in quitting or not. So, explain to me. He wasn't knocked out, why was the fight stop? Didn't he ask the ref to stop it? What else can you call that?
Not trying to be pedantic here fella but 'definition' is irrelevant. As i already said you have no way of knowing IF Ortiz was capable of continuing. If he was he wouldn't have notified the ref that his jaw was broke and then fought the duration of the round(s) with a broke jaw.
[ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing[/ame] Should the referee count to ten, then the knocked-down boxer is ruled "knocked out" (whether unconscious or not) and the other boxer is ruled the winner by [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knockout"]knockout[/ame] (KO). A "technical knockout" (TKO) is possible as well, and is ruled by the referee, fight doctor, or a fighter's corner if a fighter is unable to safely continue to fight, based upon injuries or being judged unable to effectively defend themselves. Victor took himself out of the fight saying he broke his jaw. That may, or may not, have been a valid assumption on his part. He didn't give the doctor, the ref or his corner time to make an assessment. AGAIN. I'm not saying he made the wrong decision. But, it is what it is.
