Tough fight. Tougher fight for Joe though IMO, Larry was pretty big with that great jab and movement. Would have given Joe fits. Larry might have been and most likely would have been dropped at some point in the fight by Joe's BRH but he's always shown his fighting heart in climbing off the deck and winning.

I take Holmes in points. :hat

Confused. Holmes lost to Spinks whereas Louis won (and had Conn gotten up somehow Louis would have won the decision). The weight difference was close. But yes similar fights, kinda sorta.

simply comparing respective outboxing's for both fighters. louis came through in his though, holmes didn't. but louis did have a bit of trouble with movers on occasion

Yep. But he won. Just didn't look good doing it.

Its weird because I think of Holmes as not being a great mover but that's probably because his later performance stick out in my mind more. He wasn't Ali, but Holmes could motor on occasion.

    I love Joe Louis,

but honestly, just a little movement threw him off, and upset his timing.

If you were stationary for a moment too long though,,,,,,forget about it.

If Larry kept moving, he'd win.

The thing is Senor, unless you're THE GREAT MUHAMMAD ALI!!!!!, a heavyweight is going to have trouble keeping that up for 15 rounds. Louis was occasionally stifled by movers but he was a violent finisher, and great counter puncher. If any heavy could time Holmes left with a right cross it's Louis. There's a reason the guy was a champion for a decade.

    That and weak opposition...

Jack Johnson got knocked down by a middleweight. Mike Tyson got stopped by a Lightheaveyweight twice. Your point is stupid.
Prime Holmes and Tyson both beat Louis.

Holyfield never weighed in under 175. And unlike Spinks and Conn he was not outweighed by 20 pounds. And why bring up Tyson?

Holy was a LHW just like Spinks was and he beat Tyson twice. So I dont get what your saying. Conn weighed 168 when he was whippen on Louis who weighed in the 200 to 205 range. The weights for the fighters was not what it was announced ase.

The weights thing always struck me as more myth than anything. Conn hadn't weighed in under 170 in 2 years. His last four fights he was 180, 178, 182, 180. And Louis was pretty close to.200 usually, 99 and a half isn't far fetched.

As for Holyfield he was naturally a cruiserweight, or a small heavy. At no point in his professional career did he weigh in under 175. Spinks on the other hand could make light heavy pretty much any time, anywhere. He just bulked up for Holmes.

The reason I did the comparison in the first place was there seemed to be this idea that Louis couldn't possibly win because he had been outboxed by a natural light heavyweight. I just pointed out the same thing happened to Holmes.

Ok. I see your point now. I just see Holmes beating Louis and stopping him. Think about it. If it werent for the second Schmeiling fight would Joe really be held in such high regard? Who the hell did he really beat. Like I said Conn would have beat him if he listened to his corner and a past his peak Max not only stopped Joe but he actually rolled on his stomach and quit. Max was under 200. But all these other posters are saying Louis by ko. Christ! Holmes was floored by Shavers best punch( who is regarded as the hardest hitting HW by most) and got up and kicked his ass the rest of the round. Not saying Louis wast great but there are quite a few HW that would have beateh him and Holmes is one of them.

    For starters...
    Braddock
    Baer
    B. Baer
    Sharkey
    Schmeling
    Godoy
    Farr
    Uzcudon
    Carnera
    Walcott

The real question is who did Holmes beat to be held in such regard... an old Norton? A shaky Shavers? Parkinson Ali? It could seriously be argued that Tim Witherspoon is his best victim.

This would be a great fight, Holmes would control the early portions of the fight with his jab and movement.. He would score often clean on Joe as Joe would continue to provide constant pressure always moving forward.. Joe would tag Holmes from time to time when Holmes showed the opening.. But Holmes would be banking most of the rounds on the cards.. At some point though in my view Joe figures Holmes out gets there clean and drops him and then finishes him.. If Holmes was however able to pull this out Louis would win by a convincing KO in the rematch, the man was a monster when he got the return bout.. But I don't see Holmes being able to avoid the Louis two fisted power for a full 15 round bout and once Joe hurt you he finished you.. Louis ko11..
