I'm never going to convinvce the Soto nuthuggers on here, but it's been a while since he was good.

He struggled with Benoit Gaudet, who is nobody. He struggled at times with David Diaz, who was shot. Fidel Monterrosa, who's nobody, was flat out robbed the first time they fought. Urbano Antillon almost beat him. Other than maybe Alfaro, I can't think of a fight where he actually looked good above 130 against a credible opponent, and I've seen most of them.

And even when Soto was good, he wasn't that good. He was pretty much clowned by Guzman, whether Joan decided to run for a few rounds or not. Has Soto ever in his long career even beaten a top 5 fighter in his weight class? Far as I can remember, he's only beaten two top 10 guys.

The sad truth is that Soto isn't avoided at all. In fact, he might be one of the most protected fighters in the last five year. Matthysse was only the third time in his last 17 fights he'd faced a top 10 fighter.

Pretty accurate, my only niggling point would be that he had a nicely rounded skillset in his prime and was probably a B+ fighter even in light of having been outclassed & useless against Guzman (who's a blue-chip A+ level talent but probably degraded down to a B+ himself due to his lazy attitude in both training camp and the ring, and long spells of inactivity...)

How about this for a fantasy future thread title:

"props to Joan Guzman for NOT avoiding Lucas Matthysse (who outshined his Soto performance tenfold; albeit against an older slower Soto punching above his best weight. Still, beatdown & KTFO >>>>>>>> safety-first shutout"
