Just been looking through Joe Bugner's record and noticed he fought Ali in Malaysia. I then went through Ali's record and noticed that he has fought in; 1.U.S.A 2.Canada x 2 3.England x 3 4.Germany x 2 5.Switzerland 6.Japan 7.Ireland 8.Indonesia 9.Congo 10.Malaysia 11.Philippines 12.Puerto Rico 13.Bahama's Out of 61 fights Ali fought outside U.S 16 times. Is there any boxers who have a higher percentage? (Excluding Mexican's in America I suppose who will trounce this.)
Eubank was well travelled himself although no where near as Ali, he did spend a lot of his early career in the US 1. USA x5 2. England 3. Ireland x2 4. Dubai 5. Germany 6. Egypt 7. South Africa 8. Portugal 9. Wales
Also Danny Williams often travelled abroad in his career 1. England 2. USA 3. Ireland 4. Wales 5. Scotland 6. Germany 7. Spain 8. Sweeden 9. Switzerland
Winky Wright Luxembourg x1 Monaco x1 South Africa x1 Argentina x1 UK x3 France x 12 Germany x1 20 of 58 fights on foreign soil that's not bad going.
Sugar Ray Robinson Mexico x1 Jamaica x1 Italy x2 France x12 <-- UK x3 Belgium x4 Canada x1 Austria x1 Spain x1 Germany x2 Switzerland x2 Dominican Republic x1 31 of 198 fights... And that doesn't count the time he fought in Hawaii (a new state at the time but clearly not anywhere close to Robinson's "home town"). Of course, he fought almost everywhere else in the U.S. other than Georgia.
Naaaah. Lennox Lewis doesn't deserve a mention here IMO. He fought in a total of 5 different countries.. He only had 3 fights total outside the UK or the U.S... 1 in Ireland (counts as U.K.?), 1 in South Africa, 1 in Canada (where he has citizenship). Nahh.. Not that well traveled. He basically stayed in his "bread and butter" countries where he was a proven draw. Now tell me WTF Ali was doing fighting in Indonesia and Malaysia... and Philippines..?
