Mike Tyson and Ali without even a doubt, according to a recent research Ali and Tyson still appear in the list of the top 10,20 most searched atheletes in 2012 around the world.

Ali is frequently cited as the most recognizable athlete in the entire World. I think that answers the question irrefutably.

    Ali and Dempsey.

Ali needs no explanation. But I'm surprised to see nobody mention Dempsey, who was undoubtedly a bigger name than Louis, Robinson, Marciano, etc. The only other athlete that had a comparable name anywhere around that era was Babe Ruth- that's it. Heavyweight superstars have Dempsey to thank because he was the first true crossover superstar of the sport. Other champs were popular- but Dempsey was on a whole other level.

There's an interesting parallel between Ali and Dempsey as well- both had to deal with charges of draft dodging which created more interest in them as fighters, even if the attention was negative at the time (Ali had more supporters in his case than Dempsey did, but the principle's the same).

No offence mate, but no way in hell is Jack Dempsey even close to as well known as Ali, it's a bit stupid to even suggest that to be honest.

I genuinely believe that most people who don't follow boxing wouldn't know who Jack Dempsey is.

But, you could ask pretty much anyone regardless of gender, age, nationality who Muhammad Ali was and 9/10 people are gonna know who your talking about.

very true, i would happily alternate louis for dempsey

don't underestimate the brown bomber's renown during his tenure either though; the first accepted african american nationwide hero with a 10 year reign. it parallels ali's and dempsey's careers

Dude.. MJ drew massive crowds around the world. I'd say he was more well known globally than Sinatra... probably any other musician in history besides Elvis.
