Great article. Answers some of the questions about Johnson's low weight and Burns "breaking his ribs". Johnson sounds like a decent man for the people who were willing to get along with him. Also a character as we all know. Poor Sam McVey.

Great article about the erudite Jack Johnson who truly did just enough to win except when provoked...To think that i and my dad shook his mitt in a flea circus a year or two before he died....Time flies !!!

he, the place I and my dad met Jack Johnson was called Hubert's Flea Circus on Bway and 42st. By coincidence it was next to a famous deli at that time named aptly Grant's....My dad and I would eat at Grant's most every Friday before going to the old MSG on 49st and 8th ave. It was heaven to me.. I and my dad went to Huberts and saw Jack Johnson wearing a beret talking to some patrons and answering questions...I was very young at that time and shook his hand with the other folks...I don't recall what was bantered about but remember his size and big smile...Later on reading the Ring Magazines of that time I learned about the role Lil Arthur played in boxing history..."How low the mighty have fallen", applies to Jack Johnson at that time..A few years later Jack Johnson was killed when his car crashed in 1946 while driving to see the Louis/Conn rematch... I have read an auto bio from him and he along with Gene Tunney were the most erudite HW champions...Cheers...
