I don't mean which was the better performance (cause that would be Ali since he KOed Foreman) but the better win.

You have Ali beating an undefeated, prime and seemingly indestructible Foreman and Leonard coming back after 5 years of retirement to go straight for Hagler without a tune up (Hagler hadn't lost in over 10 years).

In both fights, people feared for the safety of the eventual winners.

Both are the 1 and 2 greatest wins over. Depends on your criteria

    No contest.

Ali-Foreman. For exactly the reason you stated.

The question is which win was more historically significant. No doubt, Ali over Foreman. People feared for Ali's life in that fight. Few gave him a chance to win, even his own team. It was a historical boxing night when Ali literally, shocked the sports world. Leonard's win over Hagler was seen as a big upset, but didn't carry the historical significance.

I guess. But the fact that Leonard was retired for 5 years and took on Hagler without a tune up is also significant. But Hagler did look vulnerable against Mugabi and i guess that is when Leonard felt he had a chance.

    Ali Foreman,

people thought Ali was past it and George was unstoppable, whereas both SRL and Hagler were both losing their veneer in their clash.

INcluding the political ramifications of the Zaire fight,. and its no contest.

Past prime Ali vs prime Foreman. Past prime Leonard vs past prime Hagler like Barrera-Morales III. Ali did the impossible. Leonard-Hagler is debateable still to this day as to who won.

    Ali/Forman.
The whole world thought that he was going to get destroyed.
Only Ali was sure that he was going to beat Foirman.

I gotta agree with this! Foreman was more feared than Tyson and liston combined at this point. MMH while p4p higher than George, was ready to call it quits. Beside Ali won clearly, while SRL win is debatable at best (and I am a huge fan of SRL).

Ali-Foreman for me, no question. I don't think SRL deserved the decision in what was a weird, dull, underwhelming fight. Foreman brung it, and Ali beat him down. The performance clinches it for me. Ali was transcendent, SRL was cagey and crafty against a blunted, past-prime Hagler, nothing more.
