RC, it is pointless for you to lock horns with some egotist's on ESB who DON"T read history or DENY eyewitnesse's who SAW Dempsey at his best like Sam Langford, Gene Tunney, Mickey Walker, Max Schmeling, Jack Sharkey, and dozens of boxing writers and trainers of his time and for years later...These people have a closed mind on Dempsey, that if Dempsey returned by some supernatural means and beat every heavyweight since his retirement they would deny it for THEY in their infinite wisdom somehow knows more than anyone...Santayana wrote," those that don't read history are condemned to repeat it ". Dempsey for example as an old shot fighter kod Jack sharkey, then in his prime at 25 years of age...They say because he was fouled, but the referee never even took a point off and in the record book it says Dempsey ko Jack Sharkey 7 rds, July 21, 1927, whether they like it or not...Sharkey accepted it, and called Dempsey the best heavyweight he ever saw and said wherever part of the anatomy Dempsey hit you was painful, as he was VERY heavy handed even in his old dotage...Was he the greatest heavyweight ever ? Who knows !! But he was the roughest and toughest who gave no quarter and asked for no quarter and that is good enough for me...So cheers rc, for defending the reputation of a decent man who was a helluva fighter, naysayers withstanding...:good
Besides the fast/slow starter factor, the other reason I lean towards Dempsey is that he's a more effective short puncher on the inside and Joe threw wider shots.
Maybe you should watch Dempsey-Willard and Frazier-Ali both their best performances according to most people and tell me at the end who actually threw "wider shots".
Eye witnesses mean nothing when those men you mentioned never saw Frazier. We have technology avaliable now to see the avaliable Dempsey fights whenever we choose much like we can see Frazier fights whenever we so choose. I've seen both and Frazier impressed me more as did his competition, I'm not biased towards either btw. Nobody on this thread has doubted Dempsey is a great fighter or that he didn't hit incredibly hard but it's not the topic at hand.
M, I never included you in the Dempsey Detractor Brigade on ESB...Eye witnesses who saw RINGSIDE Dempsey from 1918 t0 1923 flattening Battling Levinsky, Billy Miske,Carl Morris, Fred Fulton, Bill Brennan,Luis Angel Firpo etc, saw and DESCRIBED from ringside a Dempsey whose punches were as short as 6 inches, and explosive as well. You cite the bout with a 6ft6" Jess Willard who Dempsey had to punch upwards to reach his chin...Try punching upwards to reach an opponents jaw...You musr=t remember M that Demposey learned just before the bout in Toledo that his mgr. Jack Kearns bet a large amount of money foolishly that Dempsey would ko the giant Jess Willard in the first round. So Dempsey went all out in a 105% Toledo sun to save the bet...Look at the first left hook Dempsey landed on Jess willard's chin in the first round. He shot it upwards with such torque and power that Willard who was NEVER floored before collapsed to the ground...Whatever you or others think about Willard , Big Jess had an iron chin and Dempsey should have gotten a 1 rd ko after dropping Willard 7 times, no DOUBT in my mind M... I love Joe Louis, my very favorite heavyweight ,but as I have posted before it took Louis 13 rounds to ko a big lumbering Abe Simon with every punch in Louis's arsenal before the referee stopped the bout in the 13th round with Abe Simon protesting the stoppage...Doesn't this say something of Jack Dempsey's prodigious punching power ? Have you seen the one-two left-right that flattened Firpo for the count in the 2nd round...So fast were the short punches even in slow motion we can hardly see them landing, but we surely see the result...So just as the old adage, "one Swallow doesn't make a spring", don't judge Dempsey punching upwards to reach the giant Willard's jaw...Just see the results....Cheers... P.S. Dempsey did have 25 first round kos.....
