No he could have never been the peoples champion. He lacks the personality, the charm and most importantly the style to have ever endear himself to the fans like Leonard or Ali did.

The safety first style isn't going to inspire people to root for him. He's respected and despite his style and personality he's become incredibly successful in drawing big PPV number's of those who want to see him beaten.

He was on his way, up to the Castillo fights.. After that the competition dropped.. The Baldomir fight was the final nail in the coffin.. Not even that he fought Baldo and ran from Marg, or in his previous fight fought Zab who was coming off his second embarrassing loss.. The fact he ran around the ring for 36 minutes was embarrassing for anyone involved..
