Was Steve Collins an overacheiver?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by ThereIsOnlyOne, Jul 2, 2012.

  1. How do you rate Irish Super Middleweight Steve Collins? The man went the last 5 years of his career without a loss defeating Benn and Eubank twice but doesn't seemed to be as wel regarded as either boxer.
    Was he just an over-achiever?

I think he got to Eubank and Ben fairly late on in their careers. I enjoyed watching his fights though. But he doesnt have enough names overall to be regarded that highly. Good fighter though.

  4. Maybe you glanced past the part where I said Irish...
or the part where I said he beat Benn twice.....
or the part where I said he beat Eubank twice.......
or the part where I said super middleweight.....

Other than that I can see where you got confused

Steve Collins confuses me, not a very nice fighter to watch, but boy was he effective. He just had a great work rate, accurate punching and he was tough. The problem is that he gets lost among Joe Slapzaghe and Roy Jones. Both looked so much faster and slicker in the ring.

I just wish Roy Jones would have fought Collins rather than ducking him and fighting doormen and cab drivers.

Collins was older and had many wars himself before he fought both Benn and Eubank!

Collins did enough to have beaten Reggie Johnson. Reggie Johnson looked to have beaten James Toney. Collins was top-notch, he just didn't look it.

I'm Irish but I don't rate him that highly. I think he won the lottery against Benn and Eubank, even diminished as they both were.

    Overrated.

In that case how to you explain the win over Pyatt, taking Reggie Johnson to a pick em decision, and giving a very good version of Mike McCallum a tough fight (although McCallum clearly won the fight). Those fights suggest Collins was quite a talented fighter.

Didn't say he was talentless. I said he was overrated.

Funny this should pop up, because I just read an article on him in a Boxing Magazine.

He said that he DIDN'T have the talent that Eubank had - He just tried harder. James Toney was better than all of them. Toney just lost his way. He thinks he could have beaten Roy Jones Junior, as he called it from the start: Cut off the ring, and just connect on his chin. He still thinks RJJ was better than him, but he thinks he could win.

He also knew he was never the best natural talent; he just worked hard.

Bare in mind Collins was a 16-fight novice against McCallum.

    its mr hindsight

Collins was an excellent fighter, who learnt his trade. He was sometimes cumbersome looking like Froch which leads people who DKSAB to think he was a plodding amateur
