in addition, giving frozen turkey to the poor homeless people with no place to cook surely won't help either.

There is no doubting any of the above's talent/skills/ability.
Leonard possibily because he was popular became more respected as a boxer after he retired (for real). Robinson had a nack for rubbing people the wrong way. Suposedly not a nice guy in privet. Ali was not really a peoples champion till his second career.

I think Mayweather has taken the Money prosona too far. It made sense to be the "bad guy" against De La Hoya. If there has ever been a Peoples Chmpion it's De La Hoya. However he should have toned it down against Hatton, and used his long layoff to step away from it.

No, he could never have been "The People's Champ". Wrong style, wrong attitude, wrong personality...

Ali is no people's champ, he just called himself that but many hated him, he was controversial. Frazier imo was the people's champ despite being the actual titleholder

People's champ is the one who holds the majority public positive sentiment

Same goes for Johnson and Jeffries, and applies to now.

ALL of those guys listed above are wifebeaters. Ignore those people who are saying being a wifebeater is what disqualified Floyd from being a peoples champ. They don't know what they're talking about. It's more about the personality and media image when it comes to being a peoples champ.

It's a stretch to call Sugar Ray Robinson a peoples champ. Some of his actions showed he was blatantly all about the money. I mean who calls off fights after it's already signed at the very last minute just because they want a bigger purse split? No one else had the nerve todo that but him.

I don't think Floyd could have been a peoples champ. He wouldn't be known enough to be the peoples anything if he faked it up by acting like a goody 2 shoe.

He's what I call a boxer's boxer. Other pro boxers love to watch tapes of him, and young amateurs admire his professionalism.

Besides, Floyd wouldn't be as fun to root for if he was a civilian's boxer. Every time he wins it's like one big middle finger right into the faces of all the righteous and just peeps that hate him.

exactly, like Joe Louis, Leonard, Oscar, and emmanuel. Guys who seem like they do as they're told and are media trained, careful not to cause any waves.

Let's not pretend like SRR didn't duck his way out of the military service that was forced upon him during WWII. It appears he bullshitted his way out by making up a faulty story.

I don't blame him either as the service was forced upon him causing a halt in the advancement of his boxing career. They wanted to use him as a propaganda tool to get Blacks to support the war effort.

A military dodger isn't someone that many people are going to encourage their children to be like.

He could be the peoples champ, only problem is the "people" don't know what they want in their champion. Case in point, someone make reference to De La Hoya as the peoples champ, problem with that is, he was hated by many native Mexicans and American Mexicans alike, because his style didn't represent what many from the Latin race considered, a traditional Mexican fighting style. 2nd case in point, the K bros represent what many would consider to be the peoples champ type of qualities, only problem is, they are too straight lace and many consider them too boring. Personally I don't really know if the term "peoples champ" really exist in boxing, because for every fighter we might consider to be one, their will be several who do not. Personally I think most champions are terribly flawed one way or another, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

For all his talent, FLoyd has style that most boxing fans find unappealing.
NO, he could never have been the "Peoples" Champ.

    Thanks for the replies.

I found this except from SRR: Bright Lights & Dark Shadows of a Champion.
"There's a quirk in American Hero worship, That I think people love you more if you've been humbled once or twice, if you're seen vulnerable, if you have a weakness. As with Robinson after he lost when he reached a level of being a mere mortal not a god, then he became more popular and more loved." - Jack Newfield

In my opinion Mayweather being the undefeated, cocky arrogant, and a ******* "Money" persona did not help his cause in this context. Ali was loved in part 2 of his career after 3 years exile, Joe Louis had a rocky relationship with the American people but respected as was Robinson, Leonard was/is treated as a mini-Ali. History is a funny thing. :D
