Well, yeah, that´s the quesion. I think so that he can. Look how he got up from Foreman´s punches and as hard as Dempsey punched, he didn´t have the power of Big George. He was a better finisher though. I can envision Toledo Dempsey knocking out any version of Frazier early but one. Frazier from fotc. He was more possesed than Dempsey against Willard. He would come back and stop Dempsey late. Incredible fight I guess.
B.S. In the few years I have been on ESB, there are few if any who use such vile self loathing sayings against ANY RACE as he did...Why would he say "WHITE GOOFTROOPERS" then? Would he say "BLACK GOOFTROOPERS EVER ? Hell no...If this is not either self loathing OR condemning a race of people including myself, my friends, my family, than you who condone and defend such IDIOTIC blabber are on the same side...Why can WE NOT AGREE OR DISAGREE on boxing issues without injecting RACIAL INSULTS which HARM a group of innocent people ,by spouting such vitriol on ESB ?P.S., I don't see posters on other FORUMS EVER demeaning groups or people of different races as I do on ESB, and they get away with this nonsense whilst many TOP contributors of the past have been kicked off and exiled...Doesn't seem fair to me...
SQ's service to the country, whatever it may be, should be respected without question ... that's not even on the table in my book ... as far as engaging on the boxing forum he's a character ... he does not often rationally debate, he either emotionally attacks, lectures or provokes responses through sarcastic statements ... and guess what ? Most of us, myself included, are not without quilt here either ... take it all with a grain of salt ... be it from SQ or Sonny Liston's Jab or any other member of their Marciano on Mt. Rushmore posse ... Burt is an elder statesman here of sorts , has perspective many of us do not, and deserves a degree of respect a level or two above locker room nonsense ... and Burt, considering there is a breed of punk here that will not honor it, simply ignore them.
That "Bafoon" Baer was a hall of fame former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world at only 26 years of age. He would have been hands down the best opponent Dempsey ever beat. Max Schmeling was only 30 years old, hardly "old". He was coming off one of the best years of his career in terms of tremendous victories. I would argue Schmeling put up prime performances all the way up to 1939. Again, a 1938 Max Schmeling is still arguably better than anyone Dempsey ever beat. You're forgetting Billy Conn? Arguably better than anyone Dempsey ever fought. As far as opposition goes, Joe Louis clearly takes it in quality Prime Walcott, Prime Baer, Prime Conn, Near Prime Schmeling > Prime Sharkey(very controversially) Quantity, Louis takes it by a mile. He beat more contenders, and they were better ones too.
he, thanks for your input...But I do take WORD'S seriously, as someone said of Winston Churchill, "he mobilized the English language and sent it into battle ". Thus ,words have meaning he, and his degrading of one race, at the expense of another is demeaning to any thoughtful person. When S, lambaste's the white race with his "wit", he would not dare to use the same language on the black race for example...We all know this... I try to "keep my cool", but no one deserve's to be called a "whitey" nor a "white gooftrooper", by the likes of him...And yes I came from a different era, and thank God I did...Cheers he.:good
FOTC Frazier was a one time phenomenon..it was a souped up version of Smokin Joe that he attained for 3/8/71 that he had never been before, and it was all downhill after that. He was definitely possesed..good phrase.
Louis beat many more contenders than Dempsey and beat the better fighters for me too. There's clear water there IMO.
Actually, the Frazier of the FOTC was slightly past his physical peak and had health issues going into that fight. Not many understand that. Frazier's true peak (and a short one, as happens with swarmers) was more like 1969.
Interesting point. Your probably right. They were already talking retirement in Joe`s hear leading up to his big night with Ali. Ofcourse there was the eye problem. Blood pressure etc..
When did Jack Dempsey ever come close to beating a 6'3 215lb 29 year old undefeated ATG heavyweight champion with speed, skills, size like Muhammad Ali? Dempsey beat up on Farmers, fatties, diseased men, and clumsy oafs with the lone exception of a punch in the balls knockout against Jack Sharkey.
