Man it is purely solo. Again no matter who you have training him or in his corner but if the guy still has to grasp what is being taught or listen to what the corner is saying. A great team does help but only if the guy actualy has the mental capacity to learn. There have been many great prospect with great trainer who have fizzeled. Bojado is one that comes to mind.
Well obviously , the guy has to be up to the task and deliver the goods and show that he's capable to put in action his trainer's gameplan and show the results of their hours of training sessions etc... But it's still a team sport. Answer me this , Imagine the same sport , WITHOUT the existance of any trainers , without sparring partners , without cornermen. Why do you think people bother to mention the trainer's name in the first place? It's a team sport. not a "team" sport comparable to what we see in basketball etc.. but the principle IS THE SAME. Only difference , the trainer , is guiding a single athlete. (who's obviously supposed to be capable to apply the gameplan). But it's the same in every sports.. The trainer ain't gonna waste his ****ing time training an entire NHL team if they're all bums in the first place. same goes with boxing.
see, it wasn't a stupid poll. I see boxing a lot like F1 racing. Ask anyone who knows anything about F1 and they'll say it's a team sport. you could have an average boxer, but if he has a great trainer who watches tape of his next opponent and tells the boxer exactly what he has to do, he can become a very powerful force. Same goes for Cutmen. Better cutman the faster the recovery, thus gaining another advantage.
ask urselves this..... can a fighter still win fights without his trainer, manager, sparring partners, cutman, etc...etc..? sure, it's only the fighter going into the ring....but it takes a team to get him there.
it takes a team to get a fighter to the top. no fighter develops in a vacuum. no fighter is born knowing all he needs to know to be successful. he needs good instruction and teaching. he needs good sparring. he needs a good manager to get him fights that can help him develop properly. he needs a good promoter to help to continue that development. all along the way....the coach continues to teach....and fine tune....increasing the fighters knowledge and understanding. then....like a piano....a fighter always needs tuning. he will never be set. as his abilities increase/diminish so will his understanding of who and what he is... no one man is an island. there has NEVER been a fighter who got to the top on their own. boxing is indeed a team sport.
Yeah a trainer can give all the advice, the way a catcher sets up a pitcher, but at the end of the day that person has to perform, once the bell rings it's a solo sport.
Of course boxing is a team sport. The closest thing there is to a solo sport is an ultra marathon. Boxing you prepare with a team, you walk to the stage with a team, you box for three minutes at a time then talk to your team again, your team can stop the fight at any point whether you like it or not. Boxing isn't even close to a solo sport.
