How would it have worked out for Ali to rope-a-dope Marciano?

Would he have worn him out like he did Foreman?

Would Marciano have pulverized his arms like he did La Starza's?

    What do you think?

No, he couldn't have; the ropes are.the last place a mobile boxer wants to be against a pressure fighter. Frazier loved having Ali on the ropes. So would Marciano.

No, Marciano thrived when people were on the ropes against him. Look at his unwavering workrate against Archie Moore, who was making Marciano miss and exert tremendous amounts of energy. If Ali were to stay on the ropes like he did against Foreman, Marciano would not hesitate to go to work and display his famous workrate. Ali didn't have the firepower to keep Marciano off of him, which would be a major problem if Ali wasn't planning on fighting center ring, where his best chance of beating Marciano is.

Good Lord, a prime Ali would have done as he pleased with Marciano.

That's a different question. The question is, if Ali executed the stupidest strategy possible could he still beat Marciano. And I don't think he could.

no, Marciano hit you anywhere he could. Even on the arms/chest and his punches were still devastating. Also he had the stamina to pound on you for 15 rounds. BAD IDEA with Marciano

I get it. Well, Foreman gassed himself. Marciano would probably be smart enough, and had the experience of going the distance, to know better. Interesting.

Ali could use the rope a dope against Marciano effectively. Could he do it as much as he did against Foreman? No. He could do it in spots if he wanted to rest his legs. Marciano would win those rounds but Ali would be conserving his gas tank for the distance.

He did this against Joe Frazier in Manila. Ali took a beating on the ropes but at the same time he was resting his legs. Joe Frazier was a more precise puncher than Rocky was so I believe Ali would have success on the ropses in spots.

If Ali were in his prime I dont think he would need to use this tactic that much. He would stay in ring center.

If your plan is to wait for Marciano to become arm-weary, you be in need of a new plan methinks.

Ali's punches would have done plenty of damage on his toes, though. I see Rocky going out on his shield.

No. I'm not sure Ali could pull it off against Foreman again.

I think it could go either way myself. I think it would largely depend on a number of other variables that could help sway the balance.
