i've noticed many a boxers with boxing names different from their birth names. such as sugar ray robinson and recently kid galahad out of the ingle gym.

i think this is a great idea especially for them polish guys who are fighting roy jones jr for example, ffs. i cant even read their names let alone remember them!

i think this is a major obstacle as far as marketing a fighter. a guy like J u s t i n fortune for example has a great name, easy to remember, easy to say and sounds cool. whereas 'Darius Michalczewski ' will be difficult to keep on the ends of hardcore boxing fans lips, let alone casual fans!

for those people that have boxed or box, can you write any name for your amateur and pro career regardless of whats on the passport and if so then why the F do people not take advantage of this?
    Thoughts?

I think you can register a different name on your boxing license, some do it because they don't allow 2 active fighters with the same name.

yeah, some people need to seriously take advantage of it.
if you can do it in the amateurs then thats even better!

it would be FAR easier to promote and market a guy with a simple, preferably a catchy name. personally, nuttin against the poles, i know a few and they have simple names but some of these guys should have got a grip lol
...i said 'some' but im being nice

the problem with eastern europeans dominating HW boxing (at one point) is that 1 they usually cant speak english and 2 they have names like [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zbigniew_Pietrzykowski"]Zbigniew Pietrzykowski[/ame] F F S !!! (hes a not a HW but still!)
HOW do you promote a guy like that....a promoters nightmare

I always thought Slugger O'Toole sounded quality.

Especially given that he was black too. Not many black Irishmen around, are there?

Willy Pep wasn't his real name, it was shortened from something Italian and long. Marciano was changed for the same reason too.

A lot of the Eastern Euros based in Germany change their names due to promotion reasons. Stieglitz and Sturm like mentioned above plus..

    Arthur Abraham - Avetik Abrahamyan
    Marco Huck - Muamer Hukic
    Manuel Charr - Mahmoud Charr
