i can remember that fight goin down and a lot of ppl have the same opinion, that it was a personal clash between fenech and lovemore, sad really
I remember this fight as it was yesterday, just came in heavy and Fenech laughed. I expected Just to easilly outbox him, watched Just spar Fenech in the Brisbane mall prior to Fenech/nelson 2,he was all over Fenech and he was still an amature.
fenech thought it was an easy win, the tiff between fenech and lovemore didnt occur until after the fight with lovmore getting an AVO put on fenech for some nasty phone calls fenech made to lovemore after the fight. Its the same as the ricky hatton fight, fenech thought the fight was won before roswell enterd the ring. Underestimated his opponent on two occasions and roswell paid the price.
Hold on a minute...Im no Fenech fan but if Rowsell lost to Lovemore at that stage, what chance did he have against whoever was champ.
No one is saying he had a chance. Losing to lovemore stuffed up his shot/payday when he didn't have to fight Lovemore. Bad management is what's implied.
WBC title im pretty sure was vacant at the time, vacated by de la hoya, KT then won it in 1999. WBA - Sharmba Mitchell, won the title before the lovemore fight took place. IBF - Vince Phillips , won it by knocking out KT. Zab won the IBF title in 2000 when it become vacant.
WBO is a big money fight? it didnt lead Artur Grigorian to anything (never heard of this guy until you mention him), he was just about the only guy back then at a world level that Rowsell could defeat as his record is very similar to Rowsells, fighting blokes with a string of losses. Rowsell would have been lucky to pocket 30k back then fighting Artur Grigorian
$30k was pretty handy money 12 years ago. Would be worth substanially more than $30k in 2012 dollars :good
He wouldn't have had to retire if he'd won the WBO title and the $30k. It would have been his ticket to bigger fights and to earn more.
