People don't appreciate that guys like Mormeck, Thompson and Albert Sosnowski would be champions and ATG's in any era
I'd say guys like Dempsey, Jack Johnson, Holmes, and Marciano never beat a great fighter who was at/near their peaks. They may have beat some great fighters but only when those guys were well past their best like Johnson-Jeffries, Marciano-Louis/Charles, Moore, etc.
WK is an elite heavyweight, no question and his sheer size gives him a huge advantage against anyone, head to head. But.... Name the best fighter Wlad has ever shared a ring with. Now tell me he's an ATG. Seriously.
Well, to be fair, Joe Louis spent his entire career fighting former middleweights, light heavyweights, and small cruiserweights, included in which were nearly every name opponent on which his reputation is based, so let's cut Wlad some slack here, no? And Byrd is way more than just "ok". He's a former world champion with wins over Vitali, Evander, and a prime Tua, and someone whom many believe Lennox avoided due to his skills and the threat level he posed. Rahman is actually one of Wlad's least impressive wins, which goes to show you the value of a "name opponent" when said opponent is old, fat or nothing more than a one-hit wonder. Would you consider Holmes an ATG, then?
01 Ali 02 Louis 03 Holmes 04 Marciano 05 Lewis 06 Foreman 07 Dempsey 08 Holyfield 09 Johnson 10 Frazier 11 Tyson 12 Liston 13 Jefferies 14 Charles 15 Wladmir Klitschko Deal with it suckers.
That's true, but as a fighter can't dictate how good his opposition is, the only criteria for greatness in a poor era is dominance. Dempsey was dominant and only lost to Tunney after 3 years away from the ring. Completely excusable loss. Johnson was dominant and only lost years after his peak. Holmes was the exact same and Marciano never lost. There's a big difference between those careers and the career of Wlad, who lost in his 44th fight after being a two time world champion. It's unfair to limit the criteria of greatness to just facing great opponents. Some fighters are unable to face a great opponent and that's why dominance then becomes key. I don't think Wlad has been dominant enough to achieve greatness yet and he obviously hasn't beaten anyone exceptional. What you have to consider as well is opposition: Dempsey lost to a brilliant fighter in Tunney, Johnson lost to a giant in, probably, a fixed fight, Holmes lost to a great boxer and so on. Wlad has lost to 3 fighters who were all very, very limited.
Wlad has 17 defense on his world championship belt 12 consectivly, he constantly fights top fighters, lost few rounds in his whole 61 fight career, no more then 15 all together, he could retire now an be a top 7, but the fact he is going to contiune on for years to come makes his bid at the #1 spot very likly,
