Vitali Klitschko has revealed how Lennox Lewis's mother stopped him getting a rematch with the former world heavyweight champion.

Lewis beat Klitschko in June 2003 in controversial circumstances, retaining his WBC title when the fight was stopped after the sixth round in Los Angeles. The Ukrainian had a deep cut above his left eye but led on the judges' scorecards when officials ruled he could not continue.

In the referee's opinion the cut had been caused by a punch, which meant that Lewis was automatically declared the winner. If it had been ruled that the cut had been caused by a headbutt, Klitschko would have won the title as he was ahead on the scorecards at the time.

Plans for an eagerly anticipated rematch never materialised, with Klitschko yesterday offering an interesting explanation for why that was the case.

"Lennox promised me but his mum decided he wasn't going to fight," said the 38-year-old ahead of the Laureus World Sports Awards in Abu Dhabi.

"He invited me to London, without managers. He said he wanted to talk just together. I came to the room and his mum is there. We talked for two hours and his mum was looking at me and scanning me.
"After that I went away and he called me a couple of hours later and said, 'Sorry, but no'. I felt it wasn't his decision, his mum decided. I tried to change his decision, but it's difficult.

"But I was appreciative to Lennox Lewis that I got the chance to prove my skills against the toughest fighter in the world. But he was lucky, because I was ahead before the doctor stopped the fight with the cut."

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Man I was cheering for Lennox in that fight and the WHOLE WORLD saw the tide turning in that fight. Lennox KNEW Vitali woulda beat that ass in the rematch. what a weak excuse

He already beat him. Did you see his face? Lewis was in terrible shape for that fight, not to mention he was shot and over the hill and he still beat the best version of Vitali there has ever been. If VK couldn't get the job done against that version of Lewis, he was NEVER going to get it done.

No need for a rematch.

 

from here on out, the winner will be decided based on cuts, and whose face is more damaged. . . a single, grazing punch can open up nasty gashes, and cuts. . .


Lewis "won" the fight, on technicality, and by default. . . but he sure as **** didn't beat Vitali.

 

I give Lennox full credit for the win, it's just a shame fans were robbed of the rematch when both guys would've had a full training camp to prepare and focus on the other.

Probably the single biggest fight that never happened in the past 20 years along with Pac-Floyd.

 

Yet he was considering a rematch with Tyson.

This case is done with, there's no need to go through it again really. Lewis knew at this stage of his career, he doesn't need that kind of fight. He was closing in on his career, he clearly didn't expect/need a fight like that and was glad to pull out of it the way he did. No one knows what would have happened in a rematch but there's a reason why it didn't happen, Lewis was past it, had no desire and didn't need to take that risk. Prime Lewis vs Prime Vitali is a different story but still would be a tough competitive fight for both of them based on their fighting styles.

That's why the rematch didn't happen and he earned that position so let's move on.

Lewis only ever rematched when it suited. Where was Mercers rematch to go along with Vitalis. Also you could even throw in a 3rd fight with Rahman.

Lewis's excuse is pathetic but people buy it. Just like the two times he has lost they were both buy "lucky" punches

If Lewis was so confident he would beat him he should have done the right thing and rematched Vitali.

 

If a fighter is cut by a punch and is in no fit state (or doesn't want to,as was the case here) to continue,then he loses the fight.

The bottom line is,Vitali just wasn't that important at the time,and Lennox was correct in thinking the only people who would really give a **** if he retired were the K2 nuthuggers.

 

Wait until you hear the change of attitude when Vitali retires after a poor performance.
Then you'll see the double standards these bullshitters live by.
