DERRY MATHEWS disappointment at losing out on European glory has been softened after he was offered the chance to fight for the vacant WBF world lightweight title. The 28-year-old was stopped in the ninth round of his absorbing fight with champion Gavin Rees in Sheffield on Saturday night and also lost his British crown in the process. But Mathews has lined up a shot at the experienced Mzonke Fana in South Africa, with the bout scheduled for the end of October. Matchroom managing director Hearn is expected to put forward the idea of the Liverpool man once again fighting for the European and British belts in the autumn. Rees is to relinquish the titles as he secures a shot at the vacant WBA title and Anthony Crolla and John Murray have immediately been installed as potential opponents for Mathews :good
I'm probably a bit harsh on Mathews on here. He seems a real genuine bloke, giving it his all, got a big heart and all that. But I think he has too be realistic here; he's just not Euro level. He's at least one level below John Murray and Gavin Rees. IMO Fana stops him too. Let's not get carried away with the Crolla win; Crolla should probably be at SFW and wasn't a very strong British champ in fairness. It was a good, against the odds win and credit for how he did it but I just don't think he can do that to John Murray. (This is of course with hindsight ) I know he's not at the level of Froch but he's taken on a lot of tough fighters who are better than him, in a very short space of time. Fair play to him. Let's be realistic again though, he's getting stopped pretty often too. He could definitely pick up the British belt again, which would be a fantastic achievement in itself but should stay away from Fana and Murray, for sure.
To be honest don't think anyone gives him the credit he deserves never turns a fight down an will fight anyone an would put a fight up against anyone i dont believe hes ever been out boxed even on saturday there was times he looked dangerous against rees even after breaking his hand in the first round
He's been stopped 7 times though :conf That said I hope he doesn't retire, he's certainly good value!
Derry can fight whoever he wants for whatever belt he wants, I'll watch him. He's an absolute joy to watch. What a warrior.
Even when he's staring defeat in the face he's still there in the centre of the ring, gritting his teeth and calling them in. When his nose went against Marsili and he battled through the pain, I was wincing every time he got clocked on the nose again. He just gritted his teeth again and slugged it out. Amazing. Ever since the KO losses he's come back a different man. His heart and determination are boundless. Maybe it's been to his detriment. Maybe he should stick to his boxing more. Maybe that's easy for me to say. I think he's fantastic anyway. My favourite domestic fighter at the moment.
Got to admit I think it's good watching Derry fight aswell even if he get's ko'd because you mostly see a war or a good knockout .The same Fana there was talk of Burns fighting I remember , quality .Also what I was thinking about today watching Rees Matthews repeat on SkySports was that thread Paul Appelby a shot fighter at 24 and was wondering if Appelbys shot how the f--k is Derry not the wars he been in .Matthews has been knocked out 4 times and tko'd 3 .Got to take your hat off to him though for serious heart .
please don't do it derry. ive been loving your domestic fights, your credibility is at an all time high. don't hide behind a trinket. face the best in britain and the best in europe and find your level.
Would prefer him to stay here, plenty of cracking fights to be had just now and you just know that when Derry gets in that ring its gonny be a war. Hell of an exciting fighter to watch and as brave as a lion.
Crolla jabbed Matthews head off for the first few rounds, absolutely dominated him until Derry caught him.
