A very reliable source close to Team Ortiz was at our dental offices today for his dental work. He told us that Victor Ortiz, the kid they call “Vicious” in Kansas and Ventura County, California broke off with his trainer, Danny Garcia. Garcia is the brother of Robert Garcia, the trainer of unified super bantamweight champion, Nonito Donaire Jr.

Apparently Ortiz was not too happy about the incident at his corner when he fought and lost via a 9th round TKO to Josesito Lopez of Riverside, CA.

Ortiz was not happy the way Garcia managed the fight and according to our source that directly resulted in the double jaw fracture that Ortiz suffered during that fateful fight at the Staples Center in LA.

Ortiz, we were told, advised Garcia at the end of round four that he felt his jaw was broken.

Garcia however wanted none of that and advised Ortiz to continue to attack Lopez with the hope that he may land a haymaker and KO Lopez. Besides, Garcia felt that Ortiz was leading in the fight so he wanted Ortiz to continue.

However, Ortiz was hit again in round 9 and the fracture in his jaw got worse. A second break occurred making it difficult if not impossible for Ortiz to close his mouth.

It was only then that Garcia finally agreed with Ortiz that the fight be stopped. However, it was Ortiz who told the referee that he can not continue and wanted the fight stopped.

Ortiz it was said is thinking of seeking the service of HOF trainer Freddie Roach but he is concerned about the availability of Roach who trains so many fighters at his gym.

So besides Roach, he is checking out other trainers he could hook up with when he returns to the gym.

Ortiz’ jaw is still wired shut. In a few weeks the doctor will be removing the immobilizing “arch bar” and wires that keeps his jaws together. We were told, the reinforcing metal plate that is held by screws however may stay longer depending on the progress of the healing.

Thereafter, Ortiz can return to eating solid foods again and a few weeks after that, he should be good to return to training.

As for Garcia, it is perhaps time to look for another fighter to train. You see, Ortiz is the only fighter he trains as he works a day job full time. In fact, he works (for Coca-Cola) from early morning to the middle of the afternoon. After his shift is over he rushes to the gym to train Ortiz.

You could tell they weren't on the same page as the situation unfolded on fight night. Ortiz was the one trying to get the fight stopped and it almost seemed as if Garcia was just ignoring him, wanting to keep on, even as Reiss was inquiring about stopping the fight.

He should go to Robert Garcia, spar with Rios. All kinds of controversy in that move.

Really though, Cottos trainer Diaz would be interesting.

The Garcias are excellent trainers since they learned their craft from their father. The problem with Victor Ortiz is he doesn't take well to that tough trainer mentality that the Garcia's have.

He left Robert Garcia for Danny because of how Robert was treating him. This after Robert took him and Rios in from Kansas.

I think Victor wanted to quit and Danny didn't allow him to like a good trainer should. His life wasn't in danger and there have been plenty of fighter who have gone on with a broken jaw. Just differences in philosophy and Danny thought he was tougher than that.

No knock on Victor but I just think he's an incredible athlete and talented boxer but his heart may not be in it 100%.

Freddie Roach would probably be good for Ortiz. I take it he wants to stay in Cali, he hasn't mentioned any other trainer.

Freddie Roach would be a terrible choice in my opinion. He should seek the services of Pedro Diaz, or even Emanuel Stewart (always forget is its Steward or Stewart)

Split up the brothers then split. Class act. Not that Danny didn't bring this on himself though. Will Victor swallow his prima don pride and work with a coach that isn't 100% dedicated to him? I don't see him lasting at the Wild Card.

I'm not sure if a militant no-nonsense type of trainer like Pedro would want to train someone as sensitive as Ortreez.
