Why does Hopkins not belong on this list? In terms of raw talent, what stands out? Nothing. His hand speed and reflexes are about average, so is his foot speed. There are a ton of fighters in boxing with Hopkin's raw talents but they lack his dedication and skills. Same with JMM. Maybe he was faster in his younger days just like Hopkins but what stands out about him besides his amazing skills?
I disagree, I think Corey Sanders was so naturally athletic he didn't even have to train, warm up, be in shape. That guy is a mystery to me. Fast, powerful, quick starter, didn't seem to even tire out that much, but I could swear he never trained in his life.
If you look throughout history most boxers weren't that athletic at all.. especially hispanic and white boxers :hat
I've only briefly skimmed but so far I've read people list Donaire, the Klitschkos, and Hopkins as unathletic:yikes
I don't think people are understanding this thread. It's been a good one to catch ******s. Unathletic = lack of athleticism. Athleticism is things like speed, power, strength, reflexes etc. So this thread is asking for people who maybe aren't fast hitters or all that powerful, yet still dominate due to great technique. Donaire and the Klitschko's are otherworldly ******ed suggestions. Both of the klitschko's and donaire are blessed with great athleticism. Wlad hits fast, hard and has great reflexes. Vitali may have slightly less athleticim, but he is 40... Donaire hits hard, fast and has good reflexes. I'd also like to add that current Hopkins isn't that bad a shout. It reminds me of the naseem richardson quote: " When I was a young man I used to go out and get the bags for the groceries. I’d carry all of them! I was so strong, and I was a freakish strong young boy. I’d carry all the bags. My family would say, ‘Why don’t you take another trip?’ ‘I got it!’, and I got all the bags. As I got a little older I’d take one or two trips. Now when I see the groceries coming in I call my sons, because I still want to get the groceries in the house but as I’ve gotten older I’ve found a smarter way and an easier way for me to still get the job done, and that’s what Bernard Hopkins has done in boxing. When he was a young boy he used to just bulldoze you and hit you with the right hand. As he’s gotten older he learned to maneuver and put you in position for the right hand. As he’s even gotten older now he’s learned to manipulate you and make you give him the shot for the right hand." This is saying how as Hopkins has aged and lost his athleticism, his technique has improved and he has been able to manipulate people walking into his shots USING great technique and footwork.
It doesn't mean how ripped or muscular or vascular a person is, that's for sure. . . I know some people with all kinds of crazy muscles, and definition, but have no balance, coordination, and are slow, can't jump, etc. So this picture really doesn't prove froch is atletic, or unathletic to people who have not seen him box. . . Froch is not an example of unathletic, with skills. . . He's a good athlete. . . He's no athletic specimen, but he's got good base athleticism.
Actually, Butterbean was a good athlete . He was just a fat ****. . . He was exceptionally quick, and balanced for a guy his size. . . His skills, however, were lacking. . .
