Kudos for the breakdown, though I disagree with a few of your choices. First off:

Sorry, but I would never pick someone as mercurial and short-lived as Bowe to win the majority of his H2Hs. Sure, if you take his performance in the first Holyfield fight and then imagine that applying to every subsequent performance till his retirement then he looks like an absolute beast (albeit not an unbeatable one). But that's simply not reflecting the pattern of his career, and I think some degree of realism has to enter into discussions like these. Bowe had about two or three great performances in him before he sharply dropped off in physical ability and skill, and I think that would always be the case.

Of course it's tempting to imagine a fully focused and professional Bowe every time out, but that's as pointless an assumption as imagining Wlad with an iron chin. Bowe showed every sign of being someone who'd fizzle out early, and that proved to be the case. His style, and the mentality of the mind behind that style, were not going to allow for a long career.

Agreed (though I'd have him above Bowe, naturally).

Possibly. I'd give Wlad the nod every time against smaller fighters (with the exception of Tyson) due to his physical and stylistic advantages, but I still have question marks imagining how he performs when put under pressure by a durable hard hitting big man. This current Wlad looks almost unbeatable when fighting in jab and grab mode, but when he's forced to fight out of that style, he's looked ragged and a bit uncoordinated. I don't think his chin's the main issue so much as his mentality. He's ultra focused when he only has to deal with a few variables, but that very focus doesn't allow him to fight in a fluid manner when kicked out of his comfort zone. It's not bitten him in the ass yet, but H2H I think it should be considered.

Louis throughout his career struggled with and was hurt by much smaller and less skillful men than the fighters on this list. He also fought in an era when the very pattern of fights was different. Ali, and to a lesser extent Patterson, really changed the dynamic of how fights could be fought. The fleeter footed big men of the 80s and 90s more or less changed it forever. Compare a Louis fight to any relatively recent high level HW fight and you'll see a lot of differences: Louis's era - flat feet, forward leaning stance, shuffling movements, very tight circle for lateral movement, lots of in-fighting; modern era - lots more movement around the ring, more flurrying from the outside, more clinching, more head movement.

I think it's extremely difficult imagining how Louis responds to this. Boxing to a degree is a give and take art. Louis will be expecting his opponents to fight in a certain manner. How would he deal with a big man like Holmes or Ali dancing around the ring peppering him with hard sharp flurries, or a huge man like Lewis or Wlad draping themselves all over him when he closes distance to get off his combinations? Pretty much ever big man Louis fought was either lacking in athleticism or skill, or gave up their height and played to his strengths. He would be mentally unprepared for the type of challenge that the above men would pose.

I also don't think he'd be able to physically compete with modern era fighters, and would get badly destroyed unless he drastically altered his style.

You wouldn't give Tyson a chance against Louis, Wlad or Bowe? I certainly would. 80s and even early 90s Tyson was just a beast, and one of the hardest and most combustive punchers of all time. His herky jerky head movement, explosive come-forward offence, and blazing handspeed would play havoc with anyone who could effectively either keep him at bay or tie him up. Even Wlad, who's probably the best at this type of thing, would have his hands full with Tyson's aggressiveness. Bowe might have some success in-fighting, where he can employ his uppercut, but he would also put himself into Tyson's danger zone. Louis I think just gets flattened.

I think Ali's intangibles, let alone his skill level, should put him much higher on the list, though I don't think he totally dominates too many of the fighters on this list.

More or less agree with both of these.

Just one vote in it between Lewis and Ali. Clearly a lot of people rate Lewis's chances.

This is bay far the closest thing possible to the correct answer. I would probably switch Lewis and Tyson and I would put Liston in for rocky or maybe a tie. Id say big bro would fight right behind Bowe, who I would have over Frazier. Overall this is a great great list:happy:happy

In that group, I'd rank them like this.

Prime Ali - Best mix of skills, ability and style. Fast hands, granite chin, descent power, good finisher.

Prime Vitali - Hardest to hit, awkward style, incredible power, head like an anvil, great conditioning.

Prime Tyson - Amazing speed & technique = explosive power. Tough physically, could lose confidence if fight was long and difficult.

Prime Lewis - Great technical ability & power. Average speed & chin. Could be lazy and overconfident.

Ali beats all 4 with speed, mobility, activity and durability.

Vitali frustrates Tyson by withstanding his best shots and returning some of his own. Vitali wins a close war with Lennox 2/3 times.

Tyson zips into Lennox guard and puts his lights out 8 of 10 times.
