Why aren't all title fights 10 rounds? The shorter the fight the higher intensity it will be. More action, less fighters taking rounds off and more explosive fighters. A 15 round fight must have been torturous to sit through if you had 2 guys who couldn't hurt each other. Boxing used to be more of an endurance sport in times when nothing about sports science was known, when strength was thought to be how long you could do something for. With modern day athletes and training I think a lot more people would be attracted to the sport to participate and watch if it was shorter and more explosive, closer to the UFC format. Thoughts?
Butterbean fights 4 rounders :nono Speaking of that fat ball of lard he recently just lost a decision to a guy over 4 rounds whom he beat in 3 rounds 15 years previously In fact the only 10 round fight he ever fought was against an ancient larry holmes
Chacon-Limon IV Leonard-Hearns I Ali-Frazier I and III Chavez-Taylor All would have been altered dramatically and quite possibly diminished in terms of quality as a result of this suggestion. Plus, reducing a title fight by two rounds doesn;t automatically mean the fight will be of higher quality. So, I personally think the idea is misguided, at best. Stamina and wars of attrition have their place in boxing, and it is a highly honored place.:deal
I disagree Theirs a reason they call it "the championship rounds", we start cutting more rounds off then fighters are going to get lazier, fatter and bring the sport into worse shape than it is now! look back at the days where fighters conditioned themselves over 15 rounds, Leonard, Hagler, Hearns etc. 12 rounds is fine, lets keep them that way
He actually did go 10 rounds with Holmes including a bull**** knockdown scored in butterbeans favour . . . . not that it won him the fight judge: Vaughn LaPrade 92-97 | judge: Phil Kornberg 91-98 | judge: Peggy McCuen 93-96 And this is Grandpa Holmes, 14 years after he got stopped by Tyson
Imagine if these guys still fought til someone was kncoked out. Id feel bad for guys like paulie and bradley who couldnt bust a grape
I remember reading something about when Freddie Welsh or Jimmy Wilde used to work in the mines they would have bare knuckle fights where the fight was won when the other couldnt stand up, same with gypsy boxing But then that makes us no better than **** fights or MMA
I think it does, there will be an increased sense of urgency and as with any athletic activity the shorter the duration the higher the intensity. How many fights have guys going hard for 12 rounds? People might claim that fighters aren't as well conditioned as 15 round fighters in the past but that's nonsense, the fighters these days are stronger and more powerful but still stuck in a strongly endurance based format, so you see guys like David Haye who can throw heavy continuous punches for around 6 rounds but then need to pace themselves to fight a 12 rounder. Why not get with the times and have a shorter, higher quality fight? It's like comparing a 400 metre runner to a 1500 metre runner, the 400 metre runner is the more impressive, explosive athlete but he's stuck running a 1200 metre race.
