Two scenarios come to mind. I can envisage something similar to Foreman-Frazier with Sonny stopping Joe before the end of five rounds. Alternatively,Frazier weathering the early storm, coming back to pressurise Liston constantly and taking his man out in the latter part of the fight.
Prime Liston beats a prime Frazier, Liston was a beast, forget the Clay/Ali fights they muddy the water when we consider Listons boxing legacy. Frazier was good but Liston was better, Liston had awesome jab, was taller, had big reach advantage and was heavier, and was willing to fight in the trenches as much as Frazier was. I would have welcomed the opportunity to have a ringside seat at a match up between these 2 in their primes, no reverse gears likely to be engaged by either fighter.
If green,feather-fisted Clay can make Sonny quit..... If slow Ringo can drop Frazier....... If blown up lightweight Henry Cooper(lead in his boots, and all that) can drop Clay..... Such endless possibilities.
Indeed so, i mentioned Clay/Ali as regrettably it is those 2 Championship fights that are remembered and Listons legacy up to these fights is diminished/tainted by many.
Tough fight style wise but I favor Smoke, I think he gets past early fireworks in which he is a part and picks up the pace as the fight progresses getting the TKO over Sonny who rocks him a few times in some exciting exchanges
Joe Frazier was a great fighte,r a great warrior. Just think the style here is not in his favor. A slow starter Joe is going to walk to Sonny Liston with no reverse gear. Bad news.
Absolutely. Too much bob n weave movement and handspeed. Joe's peak years were during Ali's hiatus from the sport. He was unstoppable from 66 -70. Joe was at his physical peak! Imagine the fight we would've seen if he and Ali would've locked up during that period without Ali being stripped. We were all robbed!
I favour the great fighter of the two who wouldn't impotently flop around on the floor in the first round and make a complete farce of himself and the sport, ruining any legacy that could be called great because him's too fwaid he might get an owie fwum da big, bad, loud man, again.
The Frazier that Foreman fought would not do so well. Prime Frazier would be far, far too much for Liston. Prime Frazier was razor sharp and harder to hit. Joe would find the better angle and beat sonny to the punch. Frazier would be far too busy for Liston. Lands too many more shots.
Nothing unreasonable about this (Zero sarcasm). It's actual a little tricky because when you said impotently flop around on the floor I had flashes of Kingston Jamaica. I agree but I'm just saying. Bottom line, Frazier was a man. A tough man. Liston was either a punk, or a confused lost child in a big mans body.
