Please tell me, how many times did Clinton Woods fight in America prior to getting a shot at Roy Jones?

In 1999 Joe Calzaghe would have gotten taken apart by Roy Jones. The fight would have been much more competitive a few years later.

I've given you a quote from Jay Larkin of Showtime which shows that Joe's team agreed to a fight in America around that time.

I find it interesting that you bring up Woods who obviously wanted the fight, which is why he:
- registered with the IBF
- worked his way up the rankings
-was willing to fight in America.

What did Calzaghe do to make the fight happen?

What has that got to do with the fact that he never went and fought in America before that? Dibella was talking about a fight back in 1999 and your response is to talk about a fight with Hopkins (who was not as good as Jones) 4 years later?

No one knew who Calzaghe was in America.

He refused to:

- fight in America
- promote his fights in America
- move up to lhw

but apart from that he wanted to fight top lhw American fighters.

Your question is stupid. A champion is supposed to fight their mandos, who tend not to be very good. On the flip side if you want a champion to make a VOLUNTARY title defense against you then you have to be willing to concede on certain points.

Lou Dibella back then would of had the final say on how much HBO would of been willing to pay for a proposed Jones-Calzaghe bout. There is no way he would of been willing to pay much for Jones to go to England and fight an unknown fighter.

Don't you find it strange that Calzaghe never did anything to make it happen?

He could of:
-Moved up and worked his way into a mandatory posistion
-Fought Darius M and then aim for a unification bout
-Fought in America to generate interest then challenged for Jones's lhw belts.

The only way Jones would of fought in Britain and moved down a weight class is if he got paid a silly amount of money. The fight would of been easier to make if Calzaghe moved up and went to America. If he really wanted the fight then that is what he would of done.

 

Those are tried and tested ways in which fighters have used to make big fights happen.

Former four-division champion Roy Jones Jr, speaking with The Sunday Times, responded to Joe Calzaghe's recent claim of chasing Jones for several years and being brushed aside. Calzaghe spoke with The Sunday Mirror and appeared to have some newfound hostility when Jones' name came up.

"I spent five or six years chasing Jones and he acted like he never even knew my name," said Calzaghe. "Suddenly, I beat Hopkins in Vegas and Jones wants to be my neighbor - it's ridiculous. If a fight with Jones made sense from a cash point of view, then it could happen, but he is notorious for asking for too much money."

Jones says that he viewed Calzaghe as a possible opponent several years ago, but at the time he saw no reason to travel to Wales to chase the fight. Now that Calzaghe is the bigger star, Jones is willing to make the fight anywhere.

“I saw Joe as a potential opponent a long time ago,” Jones said. “But I had my eyes on higher things, such as winning the heavyweight title, so it was nothing against Joe, I love everything about him. He’s a fun guy, an entertaining guy, a good person. We took some pictures together with his sons after the fight on Saturday and we’ve talked on the phone. But boxing is business. When I was the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world it wouldn’t have been smart for me to go and fight Joe.

”You don’t go to somebody else when you’re the best, they must come to you, so I wouldn’t take the risk, and why would I? Why would I meet that challenge when I’m already the best? Why would I go to your country and give you a chance to allow the powers that be to take a close decision and give it to you?"

Jones says a fight with Calzaghe is the best fight in boxing, even better than a possible rematch between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr, scheduled for September.

“But right now this is the best fight out there, better than the Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather rematch because we all know what the outcome of that fight is going to be – another win for Floyd. You don’t know the outcome of this fight, however, so it’s a fight people are going to want to see. There’s suspense, and that’s what makes for a big fight," Jones says.

Jones Jnr - Calzaghe beat at a weight that suited Jones
Toney - was a CW when Calzaghe became SMW champ and wouldnt dare diet to get in the ring with Joe
Eubank - Calzaghe beat
Benn - retired before Calzaghe won his first world title

Still look how the losses for these fighters end up going back to the name Calzaghe

Calzaghe is an ATG. If his hands were OK for his whole career he would have had more stoppages. He has a Chin, awkward hands down style, stamina to go 15 in the 12 round era, heart, and a high Ring IQ.
