Beating Reid at that point was equivalent to beating a journeymen Reid was never world class. His best win is against the medicore Nardeiello and he lost to guys like Lacy, Malinga and Branco The fact that Ottke needed a corrupt ref and judges to beat Reid should tell you how good Ottke really was.

I know what your saying but with all due respect, Enzo would have said Calzaghe of today was the best he ever looked and was training the best ever And enzo is a very good friend what is he going to say? "well joe your not really that great right now your brittle hands couldnt put a dent in a mince pie" I would have absolutely loved calzaghe and hopkins to fight all those years ago but it was hopkins that stopped it happening at the time. Before joe got the hand injuries he hit so hard that he didnt always have to rely on going the distance with fighters, but he was such a great boxer that he adapted and won points decisions against fighters he would have KOd in his prime There is far too much politics in boxing that deprives us of the fights us fans want to see And its only because of the great idea like super 6 that the likes of froch and co fought each other, otherwise without that tournament the politics merrygoround would have stopped most of those matchups happening How great would a super 6 have been with calzaghe, jones, hopkins etc ? Roy did look good toying with Tito and putting him down and letting him last. He was in training for Calzaghe. YOU couldnt tell me the difference between Roy who failed a test against Hall and Roy against Calzaghe. there wasnt a great noticeable difference except the competition. OK lets try this another way where you may see what I mean when I say competition etc. K Pavlik lost to a former WW and was going to quit only to see to the end. Thats not as impressive as Jones going the distance and pushing LHW champ Tarver. Pavlik then gets taken to a MD by Lopez in a fight many felt he shouldnt have got the nod in. Jones fights contender Ajamu and looks impressive putting in a clear victory that looks like it was one of his old performances Pavlik blasts out Jaco who wasnt as good as undefeated Hanshaw, Jones beat Pavlik then beats Sigmon and labours to win over Rosinsky who were not the name Trinidad, whichever weight Tito was at, who Jones beat clearly. Now With those performances, do you deem Pavlik shot and not worthy of a title shot, because people are making alot of noise for him to get one? In fact Jones some time after Calzaghe and coming off a first round TKO did better against Hopkins than Pavlik did. See what I mean when I say levels?
Loudon you are being very biased and untrue here as you have mixed your dates as to who was at LHW and who at SMW, over periods of time to suit yourself. ie Johnson was a SMW journeyman when Woodhall was a SMW. Woodhall had retired before Tarver was even known at LHW and before Tarver had won a world title. They were not the prime names going at the same time, so dont lie and say one division had Ottke, Reid, Woodhall, Veit whilst the other had Roy, Johnson, Griffin, Toney, Tarver, because they were not who was in who at the same time. I never said that The fight was boring as hell which is why I only watched a few of the early rounds lol as if you have seen all the fights you talk about. For the record that fight was up in the video section of Sweetboxing. Should also be up at the scene A champion makes two types of title defenses: Mandatory: these are the guys he is legally obligated to fight, as a general rule thay are rarely any good Voluntary: These are the fights a champion uses to add to his legacy. What on earth was Calzaghe doing at smw if the best voluntary fights for him are against guys coming of losses.
He was way past his prime before the lacy fight thats why he was the underdog going into it many americans and british had lacy to demolish calzaghe because calzaghe was seen as past it nowhere near the fighter he once was, and yet his ability to adapt in fights allowed him to get through fights without the power he had previously had.
Good post! I was talking about Enzo Calzaghe. I have to agree with their assessment. He lost his power, but I think he did become a better fighter as he aged. Bernard messed him around in negotiations in 2001-2002. I think he tried taking advantage because his name would have been selling the fight, and unless he got paid a ridiculous amount, I don't think he would been prepared to fight at 168 at that point. Calzaghe was preparing to fight an orthodox fighter at smw, while Eubank had to: -Prepare to fight a southpaw -make the smw limit at 11 days notice -Fight in a division he had clearly outgrown He lost that fight fair and square. I had him ahead after the first 6 rounds but he faded during the latter half which allowed Thompson back into the fight, who outworked him to get the decision. Hell no Eubank had no defense against the right cross which is why guys like Thornton and Thompson were constantly tagging him with it. He made no adjustment going into the second Thompson fight which is why he constantly got tagged with the punch which eventually closed his eye. Stop boxrecing He lost both of those fight. I had him winning about three rounds during their rematch.
