As an aside, I see Basilio involved in five consecutive Fights of The Year. That's an eye-opener.....
I'll start. Jimmy Young was in a fight of the year over possibly the most exciting fight Matthew Franklin participated in. That sentence makes my eyes bleed.
Good, good.......... Holyfield's 1996 win over Tyson was also the year Barrera won his war of wills against Kennedy McKinney. A completely disgraceful choice.
While I can't think of another to replace it, I'm sure there were better than this. It was a middling fight at best. They seem to invoke significant fights, rather than fights that were actually good.
Well at the time, I though Tyson Holyfield was THEE fight of the 1990's about. Perhaps it was shock value of Tyson getting upset like the way he did. Yeah give it a few years and I switch my vote for Barrera, but you have to think what it was like IN 1996, and the hype that fight got, and of couse the shocking after math.
I was not around in 1978, but like Tyson Holyfield I, I think it had more to do with this 7 fight underdog upsetting Ali, than the fight being "better".
1952 - Kid Gavilan vs. Gil Turner - I know Rock vs. Jersey Joe had that iconic finish, but Gavilan Turner was an immeasurably better fight. 1953 - Joey Giardello vs. Gil Turner - been a while since I watched Rocky vs. Lastarza, but Giardello vs. Turner is much more vivid in my mind as a greater fight. 1959 - Florentino Fernandez vs. Gaspar Ortega II - Fullmer vs. Basilio was a great performance by Gene and really brutal, but it was utterly one sided and a non issue after a few rounds. Fernandez vs. Ortega was a tightrope savage war the whole way through. 1960 - Eder Jofre vs. Jose Medel I - hands down really... 1961 - Haven't seen Brown vs. Charnley, but it must have been great to trump the likes of Gene Fullmer vs. Florentino Fernandez, and Carmen Basilio vs. Gaspar Ortega. 1963 - There are 3 fights I would put above Clay vs. Jones: 1. Jose Stable vs. Charley Scott 2. Gaspar Ortega vs. Charley Scott 3. Rocky Rivero vs. Florentino Fernandez All three had above and beyond action and brutality than that shown in Clay vs. Jones. Clay vs. Jones might have a skill edge though, so perhaps not a horrible choice.... 1964 - Joey Giardello vs. Rocky Rivero - I know Ali vs. Liston had a surprising turn of events and it was a brilliant display by Ali, but greatest fight of the year? Na. Give me Joey vs. Rocky any day 1965 - Emile Griffith vs. Jose Stable - Brutal fight that was way more entertaining that Patterson vs. Chuvalo
