Every other fricking sport that's popular in the US has changed their rules for TV. Is boxing, a struggling sport, really above that fray?

Obviously you've never watched Top Rank Live on FSN. One fight, the viewers literally missed a knockout because they cut to commercial a hair too early. ESPN generally runs a 30 second spot and a 15 second spot, which is better, but people internally there have really needed to fight to keep FNF on the air. It's just not a profitable show.

The greedy sonsofbitches should show two 26.5 second commercials. Then they will have their goddamned 7 seconds.

    What's next?

So I'm a huge NHL fan. About 7 years ago in the lead up to the last NHL labour strike (the one that canned an entire season) I was listening to the Toney Cornhizer show (sports talk radioshow) and he had a good point. It was that hockey was dead. No one liked it. No one cared. And what they needed to do to revive it completely change the sport and a lot of the rules that made it up. His specific quote was "you'll know when hockey's doing the right thing because they will be doing things that **** off all the purists." I know that this idea is complete **** and could really really impact fighters that rely on atrician to win long title fights. But that being said I think the same is true with boxing, as was the case with hockey. The Hardcore fans will always comeback to boxing, no matter what gimicky bull**** rules get changed or added. But boxing needs to addapted and change to make it a more marketable sport to the casual sports fan. Whether its 67 intervals or smaller rings, or a different scoring system its going to have to **** off the purists before it can move back to the mainstream.

You could get issues like that, anyway...Regardless of the length of the rest period. Production ****-ups exist in TV. :deal

67 seconds it is then. It's a sport sure. But in the pro, people are making a living out of it. It is business and TV rights are big part of that business. Plus, if the guys have seven more second to recover, they will probably have more energy to beat the crap out of each other a little more ;)

why not? it might actually do good to the fighters as it allows more time for them to recover esp if they have been kd at the dying sec of the previous round.

I thought all you guys are very concerned about "fighter safety".

That's what many people here say when someone says bring back 15 rounds "zomg think of fighter safety man" without even realizing that 15 rounds were dropped to cater to network TV, then network TV kicked Boxing out after a slew of negative press in the 80s with Leonard's retirement due to a detached retina, Duk Kim's on air death etc with that scumbag Howard Cosell also joining the call to ban Boxing.

Combat sports are niche sports and always will be in an increasingly soft society, better that American Boxing fans get used to it instead of having absurd dreams of it being bigger than football or baseball as it once was.

Boxing fans of today have more access to Boxing viewing than in any so called golden era, you missed a fight no problem it will probably be uploaded on youtube in a few hours. You missed a big fight in the 80s or wanted to watch rare classics, guess what you had to go to a collector and buy.

No more changes watering down the sport to accommodate American networks. The damage they did already is enough.

**** that ****! any true boxing fan would not agree to 67 seconds. wtf 67 seconds??? its ridiculous. are they going to change the rounds too later on? maybe it will fit better with a round being 2m 54.5 s, or maybe 3m 6s. it is never going to happen though. it always worked well and those nbc clowns are never going to change the sport.
fans should think again though.. boxing have had more than its fair share of changes...
8 weight classes has become 16 or 17. 1 championship has become numerous paper titles and now u want the change the break? fake ass fans.
    What's NEXT????

NBC is losing money hand over fist and the influence of networks is in perpetual decline anyways, so this has nothing to do with them being "greedy ****s". They're trying to make money so they can keep NBC alive and keep their jobs.

An extra 7 seconds isn't going to alter the sport one iota but it will help NBC with advertising revenues so I'm all for it.

    This

If it helps the sport, and adapts boxing to help it survive, let's do it.

**** them. I hope they go under. Bye-bye, peacock! :hi:

CBS is going strong, has expressed recent interest in boxing, and have not put forth any ridiculous demands as provisos or made any overtures of doing so. :hey

They will recognize the opportunity and swoop in to fill the market gap when NBC's boxing experiment fails, and they'll put out a superior product without compromising its integrity.

Please cite me one quote from anyone at ESPN claiming there is a DIRECT causal relationship between those two things.

The difference between a 30 and a 15 vs. two 30's is not going to make or break ****, get a grip.
