Here’s a quick preview of the super heavyweight field in the 2012 games. Most of the analysis is gathered from what I saw in the 2011 world amateur championships, which has even more participants than the field of 16 at the games. How good is this class? Cammarelle who won gold in 2008 did not advance past the quarters ( Beaten by Henry ), and Zhang who got a lucky draw in 2008 and won silver did not make it out of round three ( lost to Dychko ). More on Henry and Dycho later. Below are the four men having more potential than Povetkin. Majidov. The Russian born fighter fights for Azier. Majidov is a brutal looking slugger who can produce quick stoppages. Majidov stopped three men on the way to gold in the 2011 world Amateur games, including a highly touted Cuban named Savon! When Majidov lands, there is a thudding sound like a ferry boat smacking into a dock. The other guy is either hurt, or forced to retreat quickly. While Majidov is moderately skilled he presses the action. He looks to be about 6’2” 230 pounds. Majidov is not my pick to win gold in the Olympics, but he should medal and make early noise if he turns professional. Dychko. Dycko fight for Kazakstan. He looks a bit like Vitali Kltischko with a shaved head. . The 21 year old stands 6’7” tall, yet somehow he has the foot speed of a middle weight while at the same time possessing good skills ( including counter punching ) and solid power. Dychko is too quick for the larger fighters at Super Heavyweight, and too strong and technical for the shorter fighters. He’s a tough guy to out point in the amateur system, takes a good punch, isn’t afraid to mix it. Net-net he has excellent potential for the professional ranks. Joshua. The UK based fighter stands about 6’5”, and could be compared to an amateur version of Lennox Lewis. Johsua has a North American style. He’s athletic, fast, and hits hard enough to produce stoppages. Joshua will be fighting in his home country. He might win gold, which for boxing fans in North America would be a good thing as the networks would actually show boxing. Joshua has been stopped twice as an amateur, so his chin is an issue but I do not question his heart. Joshua is about 21 years old Hrgovic. Hrgovic is a Coratin based fighter and the youngest man on the list. He also has the best potential of the bunch, and a North American type of boxing style. All Hrgovic needs is more experience. He has displayed an excellent chin, fine technique, top power and very good hand speed for a fighter his size. He should medal in the 2012 games barring a tough initial draw. He stands about 6’4” tall, and looks to already be 225 pounds.
Boxing is my favorite sport and one of my least favorite Olympic sports. Not many people give a **** and for good reason.
