My 12 year old cousin wants to box, which boxer would be best for him to watch?

Definitely don't limit it to one boxer! I agree with the poster above, I'd avoid showing him a lot of reflex-based, and unorthodox guys like Roy Jones Jr.

You'd want him first to at least learn the basics, and then take it from there.

Marquez is definitely a guy you'd want him to watch, as he is a very complete, and orthodox boxer. Combinations, counter punching, infighting, and outfighting.

Ah, hell yes! Winky Wright no doubt about it. . .

Yeah, I wouldn't bust out the Mayweather tapes until after he's developed sound fundamentals, and technique. . I do think his philly shell, and shoulder roll are something all boxers should at least try to pick up, and implement, because it's very effective. . But only after basics are learned, and mastered.

Unlike many of the above posters...show him sound fundemental boxers who have been around beyond just the last 20 years.

Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Benny Leonard, gene Tunney, Tommy Loughran, Howard johnson....but again watch as much as you can, lwearn to spot strengths and weaknesses...ways to mask yours and exploit others etc.

He should not "watch" anybody. At least not for the purpose you are thinking of it. Don't get into the mentality of "I want to copy this guy". He should learn the basics first, figure out what works for him, then start studying.

When he is ready to start studying fighters...remember, it is VERY important to look at not only what they do right, but what they do wrong.
You see, world class athletes frequently get away with making many mistakes becasue they are special out of the ordinary talents.

The philly shell/shoulder roll technique is so complex - its not something boxers just pick up. To perform this technique requires a fighter to possess so many facets in their armoury.

There is a reason why the majority of fighters are not covering up philly shell style and freely deflecting shots off their shoulders and arms. True, if utilised correctly, it can be a devastatingly effective - and vice versa.

This is probably the best answer out of all these. If he is tall he needs to study how tall fighters fight, if he is short and stalky he needs to learn how to fight like a small man. Try to find a good trainer who teaches the fundamentals first->JAB, everything works off of it, master straight punches first . . . forget hooks and looping punches to start. The most important thing he could do is actually get into the ring. Most fighters today do not fight enough to learn all the tricks of the old masters. Toney, Bhop, PBF, and Marquez are a rare breed today, a lot of what they do remind of the old timers that I grew up watching. However, just watching them is okay but someone should be with them to break down how they fight and do what they do. I think Bhop and Marquez have a couple of vids on youtube breaking things down. a lot of stuff boxers do in the ring is very subtle and it takes years to appreciate what they are doing.:bbb
