What can people tell me about his pre war career he has a win over burley at middleweight and had a decent rank, was he in contention for a shot at the title?
I thought i did, sorry, can someone please move, and im talking about his pre war middleweight career, his left hook right straight is one of the top 5 combinations by any fighter ever.
His "cousin" (guy he grew up with) and who managed his finances and traveled with him hangs around some of the gyms in town. He manages fighters still. His name is Richard Christmas. He's got some great stories.
The vast majority of his notable wins at Middleweight (Burley 2x, Yarosz, Basora, Christofordis 2x) came about while Tony Zale - then Middleweight champion - was in service. A title shot wasn't an option for any one at the time.
Many consider Charles the greatest light heavyweight of all time, even though he never held the title. He had no trouble with Archie Moore.
I used to play poker with him at the Regal Beagle. He had this subtle tell...atsch Every fokin' time he got a hand he was confident in, he'd jump up and throw a left hook/right cross combo. Then he'd try to play it off like he was just stretching. Terrible poker player. Good fiddle player though. :conf
