'I would love to coach Amir Khan,' says Enzo Calzaghe



Enzo Calzaghe, the father of the unbeaten former world champion Joe, wants to coach Amir Khan and says with the right trainer the boxer could be "unbeatable".

Khan is considering whether to drop Freddie Roach, his current trainer, following his fourth-round knockout defeat to Danny Garcia in Las Vegas, which dethroned him as the WBA light-welterweight champion.

The manner of the loss in which Khan was caught too easily in the third round – as he was drawn into a slug-out with the Philadelphian before being unable to soak up Garcia's heavy punches – caused some in boxing to advise him to retire.

But Calzaghe said: "People say he should quit but I don't think he should be quitting. I believe with the right trainer – and my CV speaks for itself – he will be unbeatable I would love to train the kid.

"My next goal is to talk to Khan and his team. We spoke before, about three years ago. I have always believed Amir is a great fighter, despite what people think."

Joe Calzaghe, the former super-middleweight champion, retired three years ago with an unblemished 46-0 record.

While Calzaghe also trained the former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli and former WBA light-welterweight champion Gavin Rees, Khan believes Roach's ability to coach defensive smarts is questionable, with the 25-year-old deciding to hire a second trainer to focus on this area.

Khan also voiced disquiet regarding Roach's tutelage of Manny Pacquiao, who is considered the pound-for-pound champion. "I need a trainer with me 100%. Freddie is a very busy guy and he is busy because he is a great trainer and is one of the best and biggest names out there. I don't really want to be sharing. When I'm not there I don't mind what Freddie does, but [in camp] I just need someone who is going to be with me constantly and working hard with me."

Soon after Amir Khan suffered his KO loss to Danny Garcia, rumors concerning the future of Freddie Roach coaching Khan had developed. In a various interviews Khan had mentioned Roach’s name and how he would like to change up with Freddie.

Many boxing fans took their thoughts to forums, and countless fans had interpreted that Amir was either pondering or had already decided to move on and separate from Freddie Roach.

In case you were one of those people worried about the future of the popular duo, don’t be concerned. According to a recent interview of Freddie Roach by RingTV.com, this is not the case at all.

When asked about this subject, Roach said the following:

“I spoke with Amir and his dad yesterday, and the idea of changing trainers never came up. I told them that if they think that I'm too busy, and 'if you need help getting somebody else, then I'll help you.' They said, 'no, no, everything's fine.' They said 'we just need to maybe get better sparring partners.' So I had a very nice breakfast with Shah Khan and Amir. So we had a nice meeting yesterday, and no one talked about getting fired."

I had my doubts when it came to the idea of Khan separating from Roach because it is Roach who polished Khan and was able to successfully prepare him for numerous tough opponents.

There are too many different opinions of Roach out there—some good and some not so good—but, all in all, Roach is a world-class trainer with a massive amount of knowledge and the ability to effectively transfer that wisdom to his students.

While sometimes changing trainers does lead to better results, those are very rare occasions, with most of those decisions leading to further debilitation of a fighter’s already learned skills. For Khan, who has been with Roach for a long time and has learned Freddie’s way of training, going a different direction would be a self-induced career suicide.

"We talked about fighting again in December. So I was open to December because I have Chavez in September and Pacquiao in November. We figured that we could come back in December and that would work out fine. They want to fight in December so that there won't be any interference with anybody else," continued Roach.

Seems like team Kahn had talked to Roach about the fact that he no longer wishes to be number two during his training and wants to have all of Roach’s time and attention when preparing for a fight. In previous training camps, Roach would interlace Pacquiao’s and Khan’s preparation, flying Amir out to the Philippines for part of his training camp.

I think that as a young and obviously emotional fighter, Amir needs that full attention, as it would benefit his self-esteem as well as his state of mind.

Personally I am not a big fan of his, but Khan is still a world-class fighter with tremendous potential. If only he filtered some of the things that he sometimes says, he would limit the negative attention he receives.

When touching on the subject of his current loss and a possible rematch, Roach said:

"It's just a situation where Amir got caught. He made a mistake and he got caught by a left hook. He went out there a little too early and he got caught. We had planned to out-box this guy. But then Amir started to exchange with him. That's when he got caught pulling away. He had his hand down. That's something that we worked on during the fight, but it happens. This happens in boxing. If we get a rematch, we will out-box him. I would like the rematch right away. There's no sense even thinking about 147 until we show that we can beat this guy at 140.”


I agree and believe that in a rematch Khan would likely dominate the fight, although it would be much less exciting by all means. Amir is a pretty good fighter from the outside, and that is exactly what he needs to stick to, especially against a heavy puncher like Garcia.

With Peterson and now this, Khan needs to do some serious damage control, and he needs to do it fast and in an impressive fashion. By totally dominating Garcia in a rematch, Khan would redeem himself and could then talk about something bigger. Getting a rematch against Garcia should not be much of a problem, as it gives a chance for Garcia to solidify his win and earn a much larger paycheck.

Losing to Garcia again would send Amir to the abyss, and climbing back up would not be a quick or easy task. Thus, I am positive that Khan would take his time and be a lot more careful the second time around.

I don’t blame Amir Khan if he chooses to leave Freddie Roach, I’ve seen what Roach does as a trainer and I am not impressed because the man teaches no defense at all

Manny Pacquiao for example has suffered as a fighter, he is not complete because he lacks defense, and now at the peak of his career when he is about to retire he has been exposed in his last few fights as a one dimensional boxer who cannot adjust in the ring.

The main flaw of all Freddie Roach fighters is they lack “DEFENSE”. Not one Freddie Roach fighter knows how to avoid punches, slip shots, set up traps, they just come forward or throw punches to get in and try to jump out as fast as possible.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has horrible defense, he just comes forward and eats punches because he has a huge size advantage over his opponents and will just outwork his opponents. Jorge Linares suffered two horrible TKO losses after training with Freddie Roach, Linares who is a masterful boxer-puncher tried to implement the Pacquiao-Roach style of throwing flurries and getting out, but Linares began to tire against his opponents and got bloodied and eventually stopped after taking too much punishment. Manny Pacquiao who is Roach’s cash cow was exposed already in his last 3 fights, and shown no ability to adjust to boxers who can move, Pacquiao also cannot cut the ring off or set traps like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Bernard Hopkins or Adrien Broner. The slick African American boxer Timothy Bradley put on a clinic of boxing movement, he was able to slip and make Manny miss so many punches, the only punches Pacquiao could land were grazing, and the only damage done was two twisted ankles from Bradley not planting his feet properly when he was backing up.

Amir Khan suffered a devastating knockout loss to Danny Garcia, and it was embarrassing to watch because Khan looked like a fish out of water trying to survive but he didn’t know how to get back in the lake. Khan got hit and instead of grabbing or tying up he was pushing off and trying to create space between him and Garcia, but Garcia kept coming forward landing haymakers because Khan doesn’t have power and doesn’t sit on his punches at all to deliver a proper power shot. Khan still has a chance to improve because he is still very young, and if he fights smart he can win by outboxing his opponents because he has the speed and long reach to do so. But how can he learn defense if his trainer can’t teach it? Roach was a face forward brawler so it’s only natural for him to teach his fighters to be offensive minded brawlers, Pacquiao fights like Roach, but the only difference is Pacquiao has more speed and power than Roach did. Khan is trying to fight like Pacquiao but he doesn’t have the chin or the power to mix it up like that, he is not a brawler he is a boxer and should get as far away from Roach as possible if he wants to become great.

The only reason Freddie Roach got famous is because of Manny Pacquiao, if Roach is great at one thing it’s being an excellent matchmaker who knows how to cherry pick opponents to make his fighters look good, but those days are slowly fading since the boxing fans will no longer put up with the crappy match ups that Roach fighters are taking. Pacquiao was forced to fight a prime Timothy Bradley and lost, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was forced to fight Sergio Martinez because they had no other options, the only fighter in the Roach gym that wants to fight the best and isn’t scared is Amir Khan, and that is why I suggest while he is still young, he should leave Roach and get with a great boxing trainer who can teach him a good defense, someone like Floyd Mayweather Sr., or Emmanuel Steward. Khan needs to act now or else he will become a one dimensional fighter like Manny Pacquiao who made a name by beating up washed up fighters.
