I think the hysteria stems from the realization that this kid is going to be legitimately great, coupled with the fact some don't like his antics. You also have the Floyd association and perceived continuation there of to go along with Manny being made to look ordinary and no real "savior" coming down the pipe. Then you have the obvious racial issues, the foreigners hate him because he's American...so you have all these different dynamics intersecting at time same point.
