Some people go ways without a good D, but for longetivity, defense must not only exist, but it must be one of your main attributes.
It depends on who you're talking to. Your defensive level should be close to your offensive level in my opinion, but there are definitely fighters who can get by off a mostly offensive approach. Manny and Paul Williams have a suffocating offensive attack where only elite defensive/technical opponents were able to neutralize it.
If you have great D, then you're a ***** and boring. If you don't have D then you suck and you're a scrub. Boxing "fans" ****ing suck.
deal true that, you cannot be great with **** defense. you need at least average level D to attain those goals, even if you're an absolute beat offesively. Even guys like Dempsey and Marciano had some great subtle defense.
"Hit without getting hit". That's the first thing you should be told when you're wondering what boxing's all about.
Defensive fighters are my favorite. I hate seeing people standing in the middle of the ring trade shots, it takes no skill.
Defense is as important as killing instict in the fighting game but understand not defense in the upright, jab, one-twos, high guard and dull 12 round decisions. Actually Virgil Hill should have received a medal of honour for having broken Henry Maske's undefeated rec in what was supposed to be his last fight in Germany, LOL BIG TIME!
It's why almost every boxing fan will name Sweet Pea in their top 5 fighters. James Toney in their top 10. Learning to avoid a punch is much more important and difficult skill than learning to throw one.
