it matters what you mean by best choice? They wanted an exciting fight for the date. If people dont like it then they should not watch the card. These networks care about ratings. For the fight last week I watched UFC while the Lora fight was on. When Broner came on I turned on HBO.

Do I think Lopez is the best fight Canelo could get? No but its one of the more exciting fights out of the choices they had. I also didnt think Lopez had a chance against Ortiz since Lopez lost to Jessie Vargas.

People also love to point out Canelo vs Gomez fight like it happen 3 days ago. So if that fight was somewhat competitive do you not think Lopez will be competitive?

    Stop nuthugging Haymon fighters.

What happened to Mayorga? I'd have rather seen that than damned Lopez. He should be fighting welters not being brought out to slaughter at 154. What's GBP thinking on this one?

Could have saved Lopez for an Ortiz rematch or Bailey/Alexander winner or a great fight with Garcia at 140 or against Khan even. They are dropping the ball because Lopez is gonna get pounded in this fight.

Mayorga was never getting the damn fight. If Al thought he would get killed I doubt he would set up the fight. After Lopez loses to Canelo Lopez can fight Ortiz in a rematch. Wow problem solves now Lopez gets 2 big paydays. Once Lopez loses to Ortiz then he can go fight at 140. Now the kid gets 3 big paydays in a years time. No reason to save the kid we he can fight get a payday and still take the fights you suggested next year.

Canelo's arms is twice of Lopez's and his Frame is 2 sizes bigger than Lopez and he is going to act like it is the most dangerous fight?:patsch
Lopez must be in hell then.

Canelo is going to beat the **** out of Lopez so horribly I'll be surprised if they even give him to a puncher like Ortiz for the rematch. Unless they tell Canelo to go easy and make it fan friendly for the fans?

You can only use a young guy like Lopez up so much. He doesn't have the chin or the power of a Mayorga to be used like that through various weights. He lost to Vargas ffs.

I read somewhere Al already locked Lopez in to a multi million dollar deal with Showtime. Dont know how true it is. Even if e gets his ass beat he gets the Ortiz fight this is GBP and AL we are talking about. Plus the first fight was very entertainng.

Smart on Al and Oscar's part then. Who wouldn't watch the rematch? Looks like we're gonna get a Lopez corner stoppage to prevent further damage and save a Ortiz rematch while he heals up. :smoke

In time Canelo will be fighting everyone you want him to fight, and when he starts unifying and defeating guys like cotto, same haters will find something else to cry about.

The difference is that at least Gomez was actually a career Welterweight that had fought as high as Middleweight before and Gomez has pretty good boxing skills, particularly with decent in-and-out movement and upper body movement on defense and a good jab/punch variety on offense. Alvarez doesn't punch when he doesn't see openings for counters so Gomez gave him fits.

In contrast, this matchup with Lopez is much more favorable for Canelo. While Lopez has good qualities of his own, he is a career Light Welterweight who just fought for the first time at Welter against Ortiz, and will be fighting Canelo in his first fight at Light Middleweight. And though he's not awful technique-wise, he's a slugger more than a skilled boxer, his cruder technique will give Alvarez openings for counters on offense, and he doesn't have that same movement and defense that Gomez possesses. His power at 154 will likely be weak facing Alvarez who will probably be weighing 170 lbs in the ring come fight night so besides all the other advantages he has, Alvarez doesn't have to worry much about Lopez having a puncher's chance. The one thing that is certain is that as long as it goes, Lopez will try, which is more than you can say for most Alvarez opponents, but the likely outcome is that Alvarez just walks through him and stops him in a one-sided fight.

This is true, but I think GBP realizes Lopez just likely really got a relatively lucky shot on a mentally fractured kid who broke a fundamental rule of thumb in boxing; keep your mouth closed. No reason for Ortiz to have been been hanging his mouth open so often when the dude is a tri-athlete and marathoner. With that said, I also wish we would have gotten a more potentially competitive fight. But, this is a business and the chasm between TR and GBP only further propagates this penchant for lopsided match ups, in this era of PPV and paid network fights.
