:lol::lol::lol: are you serious? You think Two ton Tony Galento would give Iron mike tyson trouble in a bar fight? Did you see what he did to mitch greens face? of course when mitch green was interviewed he said Mike ran away. Tyson was from brownsville brooklyn went to juvi on the regular and served time in prison. i highly doubt a fat bartender like Two Ton Tony could hurt mike unless he hit him with a chair.

My barroom brawler dreamteam would be
Jack Dempsey- the man fought in saloons since he was 15 for godsake.

Stanley Ketchal- He's another one, I think he got in to boxing when someone witnessed him knocking out a much bigger bouncer of a brothel when he wouldnt let him in because Ketchal was only 16

Duran- The man defines Matchismo, comes from the slums of panama Manos de Piedra had great killer instict, punching power and was a madman

Foreman- I dont even have to explain why I want foreman on my side during a bar fight

Liston- Ex-con/violent criminal. imposing size great power

Tyson- Again i dont even need to explain

Graziano- graziano was a pure street fighter/thug

    Lamotta- brutal, relentless, crazy

    Marciano- huge punch, durable brawler

Baer- Madcat Maxie, great durable slugger crazy power

Edit: Iran Barkley- "the blade" grew up in the mean streets of the south bronx. Ferocious left hook artist, good chin as well stylistically total street fighter

Tyson went to juvi for beating up old women, robbing grandmothers. He would offer to carry their shopping then beat them up and steal their purses.
He went to prison for raping an 18 year-old girl.
He went back to prison for beating up a 62-year-old man.
Does this make him a tough guy on the streets ? :huh

Tony Galento was from a tough neighbourhood and grew up in tough times too. And, yes, he would be allowed to hit Tyson with a chair. He's more likely to smash a beer glass in his face, but whatever.

Galento owned a bar called "The Nut Club". You would not want to come to his bar looking for a fight without getting hurt, whoever you are. Maybe if you were armed with Tommy guns. He started out as a bartender during Prohibition days. He was no joke. He had hundreds of boxing matches, amateur and pro. He probably fought a thousand bar fights. Drinking and fighting is what he did.

    He didn't really.
Let's not exaggerate what these great fighters did 'on the street'.
I mean, Mike Tyson inflicted damage on Mitch Green's face, but guys get their faces mashed in and jaws broken, lips split, eyes shut, all the time on the street. I've broken a jaw myself (and I'm not proud of it).

There's a HUGE difference between killing someone and inflicting a bit of facial damage.

Obviously Tyson would destroy 99.99% of people on the street.
I'm not sure he was a great street fighter though, compared to other fighters. He didn't live in times when street fighting was necessarily. He was a petty thief on the streets and a GREAT FIGHTER IN THE RING. :good

this is true, but the same was the life of McAvoy's biggest nemis, the feared Scot's middleweight Bert Gilroy.

Gilroy was brought up in Coatbridge, Scotland just outside of Glasgow, the son of Italian immigrant parents, his life was one of self preservation, family dignity & pride. Coatbridge was an outside extension of Glasgow shitholes. Catholic & Protestant divide and poverty & alcholism rife. Fighting there was a way of life among the Coal mines & Steel refineries. Him and 4 of his 5 brothers were forever defending their Italian heritage which was rather ostrizicied in those early years, and he had as many street fights as ring appearances.

Gilroy's boxing career took him to Bridgeton Glasgow, another shithole and he became Scotland's best Bigman by 1939. He ran "Tossing Schools," illegal gambling and ocassional organised bareknuckle fighting haunts. He was Private Minder to some of Glasgow's finer citizens, including offers from Glasgow Don, Arthur Thompson. Aswell as he went onto to Coach top worldclass fighters and champions, McGowan, Caldwell, McCormack & Calderwood...

he and McAvoy were planned to meet from as early as 1938, to as late as 1945, with one schedualed match set for June 10th 1940, Gilroy was severely injured in Military Manuevers.

if I had a time machine this is one fight I would have loved too have witnessed, both in & out of the Ring!!!

Legend X is right, Tony was through and through a baroom brawler and is no pushover. A very tough, very dirty and very powerful guy who unlike most douches you see trying to start fights nowadays in the street knew how to fight. A state amateur champ at middleweight, light heavy and heavy, Tony grew up fighting in the ring and on the street. He had over 100 proffesional bouts and was only decked twice, added to this he had countless fights in his bar where he challenged patrons to fight him. Another thing you've got to consider is just how dirty Galento was and how far he'd be willing to go. He was more then willing to low blow and eye gouge, elbow etc. in a sanctioned fight where money is on the line what do you think he'd do in a street fight?

In Britain I'm thinking The Kray Twins (and their one time buddy and then victim, Frank Mitchell, Lenny McClean, Roy Shaw and Charles Bronson - all sometimes boxers - you can pretty much expect to have your face removed by either one if you were locked in a room room with either one - but altogether?? Really doubt there are many who stand up to this mob

I'm sure Sam Langford was the bar room fighting champion of his street at a young age.

Well Gilroy was a ok fighter i guess:roll:

But for the injury that Gilroy sustained to his pelvis in the army, the UK would have had a domestic bout to rival any of the great bouts.

I think it would have been sort of bout where fight would be clean but bloody brutal, no quarter asked and most certainly no quarter given.

Postfight i reckon if these two had a few 'bevvies' together, it would have been wise to give them a wide berth.

Neither were physical giants but had fighting hearts that eclipsed the biggest of men.

If you have a spare seat on that there irn bru powered time machine, save it for me will you.:thumbsup
