    One of the least talked about great boxers. Brian Mitchell does not get enough thread time on ESB classic....so here goes...

    From late 86 through 91 Mitchell was one of the best if not the best SFW's around....Unfortunately other than Tony "The Tiger" Lopez fights he did not have any matches against the other top flight SFW's of the day....

    How do you rate him among the other SFW's? How does he rate among Africans?

    Who would win if Mitchell had fought:

    1987 JCC
    1987 Barry Mitchell
    1988 Juan Laporte
    1988 Rocky Lockridge
    1989 Azumah Nelson
    1989 John John Molina
    1989 Jeff Fenech
    1990 Bernard Taylor
    1990 Genaro Hernandez

    Wow...this division was pretty stacked during these years.....How come we didn't see more of these guys facing each other?

    Anyway....How does Mitchell do? Any stories to share? How does he rate among other African boxers?

    We didn't see those fights because Mitchell hoarded away his title in South Africa and wouldn't leave for any amount of money or incentive. I'm glad fighters today are more adventurous. Mitchell had always used the excuse of being robbed at the Olympics by foreign judges for why he wouldn't risk leaving SA with his title. And he refused to take the tests, citing his fear of needles, even though his arm was covered with tattoos. :patsch

    ??? Of his 17 title fights only 4 were in South Africa????

    I am not a wikipedia fan but...Quite possibly the best South African boxer of all time, due to South Africa's apartheid policy during those times, Mitchell became a true 'road warrior', defending his title almost exclusively abroad.

    As good as Mitchell was, the WBA clearly broke the Gleneagles agreement; Mitchell should not of been allowed to fight for their title before Mandela's release, and free elections.

    He was beautiful to watch and he really had a winner's mentality but his quality of opposition wasn't good enough to concretely prove his greatness. But that's not really his fault, since the division was weak during his reign.
