This......................................... **** Wright once again, he ruined at least 5 can't miss fights, like people were tuning in to watch him, he had the nerve to duck the likes of ODH Mayweather and Margarito
Exactly Wright just pisses me off so bad. How do you turn down 6 million to fight Oscar and then go on to fight Hopkins for 3 times less? It makes NO sense. He even admits all of this in an interview at boxing scene.....damn, at least make an excuse
atsch I'm still banging my head breh, that period those divisions were stacked, and Wright(the pillow fisted notorious weight cutter) was the only one picking and choosing, cherry picking
He also could have had a Taylor rematch no problem, and he turned down what, 4 mill for that one? A fight that most people thought he won? Now he's fighting on undercards against other wash up ex champs :verysad
Looking back over Oscar's career you can only really say he ducked Winky Wright , him aside he fought everybody worth fighting from LWW - LMW , his days below and above them weights were brief but the fact he fought Benard Hopkins says a lot about the guy , De La Hoya is my favourite all time fighter purely on the basis of style , i fell in love with watching his style and I'm not sure there's been an exciting fighter like him since , he was IMO very unique , but thats my opinion , we all have our crushes Back on topic , De La Hoya done and said a few things that didn't sit right with people at times , but ultimately his popularity was what in the end damaged his image , he knew he could get away with not rematching , or selecting opponents and still make money , Steve Forbes being a prime example , open stadium in LA for fighting Steve Forbes for Gods sake , his antics at WW was where the hate began for me , Quartey should of been rematched , Trinidad should of been rematched , Mosley should have never of had to go up to 54 , he should have fought Winky , but ultimately ill stand by this statement : Oscar De La Hoya love him or hate him has a very very thick resume of top fighters across multiple weight classes and only ever ducked 1 man , his style and heart always gave the fan what they paid for , he is a modern day great , and there's nobody who has even come close to his level of polarity since he retired
Winky was weird man, he opted for higher risk/lower reward fights over lower risk/insanely high reward fights..... i think it was a matter of him figuring he could milk more out of the cash cows and that if he kept fighting and beating the best he would eventually be in line for even more money vs the big money fighters. Taking B-Hop for way less money than he would've have gotten vs DLH was just insanity
