Would Calzaghe have been "Hattoned" if he had stepped up like Ricky?

We all know that when B-level fighter Ricky Hatton stepped up to the big boys he was embarrassingly KO'd twice. We all know this. But something we can only speculate upon is: would the same have happened to Calzaghe?

If you look at the resumes of both fighters, they are actually quite similar. A series of no name bums, beaten on said fighters home turf with said fighters home referee. Both fighters enjoyed premature stoppages (see Calzaghe KO specialist on YouTube), and illegal wrestling tactics (see Tsyzu vs. Hatton). Both fighters enjoyed a bit of hype due to beating a few washed up, formerly A level fighters (Tsyzu had fought 3 rounds in 3 years, Castillo/RJJ were beyond shot; Hopkins was olllllld), as well as a few lukewarm fighters in their prime. This however is where the similarities end.

Ricky had the courage to step up and risk his unbeaten record. Did he actually think he could win? Was he looking for some huge paychecks? We will never know. What we do know is that he put it on the line and he was embarrassingly knocked back down to B level. Still, one MUST respect him for going for it.

Calzaghe, a man who was seemingly in the same position as Hatton (minus such a following) chose to remain in Whales for nearly his entire career. He never went for it. He never put his 0 on the line.

It truly makes one wonder, if Calzaghe had stepped up against one of the ATG's in PRIME during his time as a fighter, would he have been "Hattoned"?

Getting beaten by Floyd and Manny does not make you B level.

Kessler & Lacy were in their primes when he beat them.
Hopkins was still rated in top 10 P4P when he beat him.

If anyone was supposed to "Hatton" Joe Cal it was supposed to be Lacy. So, no.

Calzaghe beat prime champs...and Im not even gonna get into the B-Hop argument again That horse is well and truly dead and flogged!

edit: Calzaghe IN Whales!? What a disturbing thought (Shudder) haha

45 and 2 with 32 ko isn't a bad record, and the only two fighters to beat him are the best two fighters of this era. Ricky Hatton is actually one of the best ww of his era, not the best, but one of the best imo

    Good catch.

Also, just because you got beat by two A+ fighters doesn't mean you wont get beat by A level fighters.

You can make Calzaghe arguments all day but the bottom line is he really didn't do much with his career when he DEFINITELY had the opportunity to. There is no denying that.

Slyk get away, Jones Junior and Bernard didnt want the fights in their prime or at elast refused to fight Joe over here whilst he refused to go there for peanuts (which is what he was offered). So America sent Lacy....he was returned to sender destroyed and never the same...
