Everyone knows who he is, everyone calls him the greatest, everyone seems to love him.

Does his career really warrant that status?

I'm not an Ali historian or anything, but he was a serial womaniser, a racist, cocky, arrogant, disrespectful.

Is he even in the top 10 greatest boxers of all time? Doubtful. (edit. He probably is in fairness)

Why does history look so favourably at Muhammed Ali.?

Not a hater. Just interested to hear people's views

Because he's a cultural icon and is the greatest heavyweight of all time

He's second to SRR. Fought em all. He did have a couple of dubious shady decisions in his career, though.

well for one in the long run no one cares about things like
that. It's his boxing career that matters. Boxing is about boxing, it's not nice person contest.

Is it that time of the month again? :-(

It seems to come round sooner and sooner each time.

He was nothing as bad as Floyd. Does Lil Boy Floyd's out-of-the-ring antics take away from his achievements inside of the ring?

The only two bad characteristics you have mentioned really are being a womanizer (who wouldn't sleep around if you had models being thrown at you) and racist. With his supposed racism, please remember the times in which he lived and where he lived. Pretty hard to keep a favourable opinion on the white man to be honest.

The dude is without a doubt the best HW ever, his resume outweighs Louis's and Holmes easily.

Was involved in the biggest fights in recent boxing history (Liston, Frazier, Foreman). Based on his boxing achievements alone he is a certified ATG

Despite all that I still think he was a douche for verbally abusing certain fighters, especially Frazier. He pushed the line. But obviously people wont really remember that, rather they will remember how he refused to go into Vietnam and lost his belts and 4 years of his prime. Regardless of how you look at that, it is a marvellous feat that not many others would do

At a time where African Americans where under such societal repression, Muhammad Ali rose up and showed the world that a Black man can be a champion without acting and behaving like a man white man would have wanted him to.
He inspired millions, and that outweighs his womanizing, arrogance, and cockyness

"Is he even in the top 10 boxers of all time? Doubtful"

    Are you crazy?

    Get a history lesson

KO'd the monster that was Foreman
    Terrorised Liston
Had a great trilogy with a great man who had his number

Had 2 years of his prime career stolen

And owned the ring with finess and style

Could right pages on his life and boxing achievements

His only downmark is the way he treated Frazier... but he was the 'lousiville lip'

They made up later in their lives anyway...

Think it suck balls how well known he is compared to his counterparts...

everybody on the street seems to think they 'know' who muhammad ali is...
heard of - yes but not know

When Frazier passed in 2011 literally nobody in the general public cared
When Ali passes all of the general public will pay attention - and this sucks balls.

Tell that to Joe Frazier and his family. Ali was a spoilt lid compared to how Frazier was bought up and that's what botherd Ali so much about Joe, Joe was the real Mcoy, a true rough and tough black badass.

And none of that has anything to do with his boxing ability.

Take note people. Whenever some runs out of things to hate about a fighter, they start analyzing his personality.

Marciano beat the **** out of his wife.
Valero was an alcoholic cokehead that murdered his wife.
Liston was in with the mob.
    Tyson was convicted of ****.

That doesn't even begin to scratch the surface.

Ali transcends boxing. He's become bigger than the sport that made him.

As people in this thread have said, he is an inspiration to millions..... I'm just asking why & how? He was an arsehole in truth.

Liston was actually the 'good' guy in the Ali fight...

But before that fight nobody wanted him champion and he was the 'bad' guy
    why was this?

The media and public sucks balls

You can be an AZZhole and still do many more "good things" than the average joe.

Bill Clinton cheated on his wife and probably sitll does. He's heavily involved in philanthropy. That's more than we can say for the average well-behaved man
