I don't care about either of them, but I've seen a few people bring up Frazier's relationship with a corrupt Philadelphia police chief a few times. Know anything about that?

No doubt Ali is an ATG if not the hypothetical "GOAT" at heavyweight. But if you rate Ali as "GOAT" then Liston must be in your top 5 at heavyweight-- re-watched both fights several times and there is no question in my mind Liston threw both fights. Ali had more political/organized crime firepower than any fighter, EVER.

Because he most likely has 2 of the best wins in boxing history ever top 10 wise (Liston, Foreman) is the GOAT in boxing's premiere division, fought out and came out on top in the BEST heavyweight division ever seen. Who gives a **** about his womanizing? Those days the heavyweight champ was THE celebrity athlete.

Unless your Ali's wife(s) you best slow clap for that man and all he did. His rivals do :

Ali was a great boxer and an ATG, but he is the most overrated athlete in history. He is not in the same conversation as Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth and many others.

What he did to Frazier was a disgrace and should be held against his career. He was worse to Frazier than any of the "injustice" he supposedly fought against. It was unforgivable, especially considering Frazier gave him his big break.

I doubt many people would disagree with this, even Ali's strongest supporters.
It's even more likely, given Liston's relationship with the mob.

Ali also lost to Norton, and he would probably have lost to Foreman, if not for that 8 second count. (I wonder how much they paid that ref, and also the announcers so they wouldn't mention it? - Not to mention foreman who was up & ready to fight, yet never complained about it, even years later? )

    --------

It's really hard to bring up negative stuff about Ali, though, because he truly was an important hero to black America in the 60's. Despite his massive flaws, He was as important to the social movement as King. (Martin, not Don!)
Due to his brazen, outspoken attitude, his "I can do anything I want and (whitey) can't do a thing about it" stance, he was the very lightning rod of that movement.

Of course, he was only doing it for himself: When he said "I'm so pretty," it was pure vanity, he wasn't saying "Black is beautiful" in fact he was practically saying "I look white" (and Frazier looks like an ape) - but black America TOOK this as "Black is beautiful" which was a great thing. Combined with this unabashed & entertaining black man being the greatest and most recognized athlete in the world, well of course this was incredibly important for black self-esteem & social change.

So, to disparage this man naturally offends those who were involved in / affected by the socio-politiical movement of the 60's. It's understandable.

In some ways, Ali was indeed a great human being, despite himself.

    - and a total ****.

Who cares if he was racist? He won a gold medal for this country and couldnt eat at certain restaurants in his hometown. It was the 1960s for ****s sake. He was young, angry and impressionable.

He is not that way anymore.

I'm just now seeing this, but is "Hands of Iron" alluding to Duran and Tyson, possibly your two fave fighters?
