How would Mayweather perform against Clottey?

Floyd wouldn't open Clottey up, the worst case for Clottey is that he puts on a stinker like he did against Manny.

 

A good friend of mine is adamant that Clottey would be a nightmare for Mayweather.

I can agree that it's a different approach to what everyone thinks could be the answer to beating Mayweather, but I just can't see Clottey's style being that big a problem.

First off; the Pacquaio fight has created a false perception of Joshua Clottey. He's not that defensive a fighter. Sure he keeps the guard high, but he opens up often to jab and throw uppercuts. His jab, though well timed is not quick enough to land on Mayweather. Floyd would be able to punch with Clottey and land his right hand lead on the Ghanaian.

As for the high guard, you saw what Mayweather did when Cotto employed that tactic. He looped the right cross and hit Cotto on the ear. Expect the same thing to happen to Clottey.

BODY PUNCHING. Mayweather would jab that body all night. Say what you want about his punching power, but do you really think Clottey would just think 'meh' as Mayweather hits him in the solar plexis over and over? No. He'd start trying to block that jab to the body, leading to Mayweather feinting that jab, and landing upstairs.

Mayweather's elbows. Watch Mayweather. He gets close, uses his elbows to manouver his opponent's guard out of the way, and then twists his upperbody to create leverage on a right hand lead. Clottey would get hit over and over.

Mayweather isn't knocking Clottey out, but he's not losing more than a single round either.

 

Clottey is a lot better defensively than Cotto and a lot bigger as well. Clottey also has a better jab than Cotto. I noticed that in their fight when Clottey was robbed against him.

**** wouldn't get in, Clottey had a Winkey-esque turtle shell that was quite effective at blocking more work out when not opening up. If Floyd wanted to "hurt" Clottey he would have to get on the inside and give Clottey angles and catch him hard when he opens up. I don't think Floyd would do that though, because Clottey is strong as **** and can take hits from harder and faster punchers than him.

From my view, he would be content to simply outbox, tie up and pot shot all night.

Like I said, Floyd might body jab him but that **** wouldn't land clean and would most likely bounce off his elbows and forearms.

Never said Clottey would win or hurt Floyd. Hell Floyd would win every round and every second of every round.

But Floyd isn't hurting Clottey.
