Association vs League in Amateur boxing

League fights have always been 3 min rounds and from my opinion the league is set up to introduce the boys into the pro's. IMO the better fighters come out of the association and only association boxers can go to the Olympics. Ive seen guys that have won Aus titles in the league and cant win at state level in association. Ask TC what he thinks, he apparently had plenty of fights in the league.

 

league came about because of the politics in the association, bias judging etc, at one stage a few years ago the league had nearly double the amount of fighters,but that may have changed,in qld there are three diff groups,for the same reason

 

The general consensus among the ABA fighters is that the League boys are hillbillys

 

if you fight ams, and you fight in the league without a hope of representing oz at the olympics, you are either stupid, misguided, or cant cut it against legit competition.

..basicly the Association does **** all for the bush and is all about the capital cites...maybe they got abit shy of the vast distances that the bush boys travel for fights..and the you support us and we support you mentality...that is being committed to support your fellow club at their next tournament(fundraiser)..
..that and all the best fighters were coming from the bush and the money was probably gunna end up going that way too...then all the city mob were gunna have to travel..

the AIS should take control to make sure kids from both bodies get a chance to prove their abilities, and a chance to rep oz at the olympics..

Good point. From memory they were quite big in ares like Rockhampton and Townsville in QLD, did the league do much in country areas in NSW?

 

Yeh league is or at least was fairly big in NSW back when i was boxing (around 05-08)

i had quiet a few fights in the league.. and its not because i didnt think i could cut it in the ABA its just that we couldnt always travel to the ABA fights as there were **** all that weren't multiple hours away....
plus their as a few times when the leage had figths in my hometown.. why the f would i travel hours on end to fight and then sit a home town fight out... **** that!

 

The league also pay for fighters fuel money and will also pay for accomidation if needed, the ABA from my knowledge dont do that. ABA has never had a show in the town i live in , u have to travel to melb or sydney so for country people its much better to fight in the league but if you want to represent AUS at the games then u have to fight for the ABA.

ABA vs League are also two very diffrent styles, ABA is suited for computer scoring tap tap punching whilst the league is more suited for getting fighters prepared for the pros. League turned to sht when Canavan passed away and has never been the same since.
