Teofilo Stevenson 3 Time Olympic Gold Medalist in HW division. Turned down the opportunity to turn pro for ideological reasons.

Given how the Cuban fighters are doing today, would he have been the GOAT HW if he turned pro back in the day?

I remember Atlas talking about Steveson vs Ali on FNF a few months ago. He favored Ali to win though in a pro fight

Ali would have won easily against the amateur version of Stevenson. But Stevenson could have developed, with proper training, into a very good heavyweight contender. Then, who knows? Maybe he could have given Ali a rough fight.

But I can't see anyone with Teo's standup style beating Ali. It would probably resemble Ali's fight with Ernie Terrell. And Ali would be able to take Teo's best shot, so the puncher's chance would probably not be a factor.

Too bad Stevenson was locked up in Cuba.

You can never really tell how well a top amatuer will do in the pros until they actually turn professional and make their way. So many good amatuer fighters haven't done as well as you would think that thwy would do in the pro ranks.

That being said, Teofilo was one hell of an amatuer.

Back then the only difference with the pro was the 3 rounds, no headgear and the gloves a little bigger, still TS was knocking fighters out like it was nothing, so with a proper training and smallest gloves he could have make his mark, he was tall and fast and could knock you out with either hand.

Ali would have out boxed him. Foreman would have walked him down and bludgened him. That line of his about turing down millions of dollars because he already had millions of fans. They still would have been his fans.
