It would be ridiculous to atempt to make a judgment because we have no footage. Frankly I question whether any of them even existed.
Harry Greb is an obvious choice. We know which fighters were great because they were the ones who took on all-comers, local champions and challengers with reputations, and beat them, and fought the big time epic fights. We can also assume the men who beat known fighters who were MUCH BIGGER than themselves were great too. Guys like Kid Lavigne and Joe Walcott were great. Exactly how they looked compared to filmed fighters is impossible to gauge correctly. Forming a firm opinion of their chances against later (filmed) champions is impossible. In my opinion. This is most severe in the cases of fighters who dont exist on film AND WHOSE OPPONENTS dont exist on film. But we cant deny greatness with the weight of evidence to support certain fighters.
Fight footage or any footage? Jack Britton George Dixon Joe Walcott Kid Lavigne Tiger Flowers Johnny Dundee Abe Attell Young Griffo Panama Al Brown Pete (Kid) Herman Nonpareil Jack Dempsey Jack McAuliffe Jack Blackburn
There's some footage of Darcy's fights with Eddie McGoorty, Dave Smith and Jimmy Clabby available. Also, I think a bit of Johnny Dundee's fight with Eugene Criqui is out there. Some others for which there is no footage (that I know of) : Bob Montgomery Freddie Miller Pedro Montanez Wes Ramey Frankie Genaro
Holman Williams Eddie Booker Cocoa Kid??? Jack Chase Lloyd Marshall Anyone more recent than these guys?
There is a little on Marshall...the '46 bout with Charles, and some footage against Freddie Mills. I'd love to see Holman Williams (especially the Satterfield fight)
