it's not like that. if nothing else williams was known for his speed and power and Liston didn't quit on his stool after a few rounds of Williams landing vicious hooks on him. If Williams and Machen didn't make Liston quit then Young would NEVER do it.

No chance Young could outpoint Liston. Listons skills, jab, strength, workrate are too much for young

I'm not sure how good williams was as he weren't proven at the highest level.

Well we'll never know because they never fought.

Cleveland Williams may have been 43-2-0 when he met Liston but he had never beat anyone! Williams was on a comeback.

Bob satterfeild retired Williams for two years at the 31-2 mark and Bob was still the only name on the big cats record before facing liston.

Williams best actual wins in this 12 fight comeback were against unrated (31-13) frankie daniels or (27-16) john holman when both were on worrying losing streaks. Liston was the big cats first “step up oppoenent” since 176lb Satterfeild smashed him to bits.

Later Williams managed to improve enough to somehow get into the rankings after 10 years as a pro but not before facing Liston. When he met Liston williams was still unproven.

Retired? You love to make **** up. Williams was a 19 year old kid taking a fight with a top 10 rated contender on last minute substitute notice when he fought satterfield. No way was Williams even close to his prime in 1954.....Williams was just a child lol.

Williams is the only man to ever knock out a near prime Ernie Terrell, also was robbed in the rematch. He also drew with Eddie Machen in a fight most thought Williams edged.

Williams blasted out top 10 ranked Alex Miteff, that had the press calling Patterson to fight him.

Billy Daniels was also top 10 rated as the time Williams beat him

He stopped Earnie Terrell and arguably beat him again in the rematch. Terrell was a good contender so that proves him imo

Once again you are lying. Williams was rated # 10 when he faced Sonny Liston the 2nd time in 1960.

He also was rated top 5 by ring magazine 3 years in a row from 1961-1963

I probably should watch the rematch and the fight with machen. I've yet to see either.

Maybe williams was anounced as being 10th rated on the night but my colection of magazines from the period do not back this up. Williams was not rated before Liston beat him the first time and all he did was beat curly lee and 13-10 ernie cab in the meantime. Cab lost his last 2 fights and never was anybody and neither was curly...

"Curley Lee (Chapman) was rushed into the Williams fight, having subbed at the last minute for an injured Sonny Liston. He was losing the bout, but after being decked in the fifth, he had won both the 8th and 9th rounds, making the bout close. A minute into the tenth he was on the canvas, his life changed forever, as he suffered brain damage.
Thirteen years later, he attacked his wife and her brother with a crowbar. The wife escaped with injuries but he killed the brother. Then he went inside his house and drowned his 4 young children in the bathtub. Then he tried to kill himself by drowning himself in the same tub. When the police arrived, he said "Come in--if you can stand it." He was found NOT guilty by reason of insanity--the judge specifically citing the Williams fight as having caused his brain injury."

This was much later when Cleveland had improved. Williams was unrated and unproven when he met Sonny. Come to think of it Terell was unrated and unproven when he met Williams.

There are two components to this question:

    1. Liston was better at prety much everything than Foreman.

    2. Foreman had the gift of longevity and Liston never could have!

So what? it shows that he still had talent when he met Liston..

More importantly my point was that Williams had power and speed and he didn't make Liston quit like lufcracy is making him sound like he would. There is no chance of Young making Liston ever quit.

Well Foreman took a long break after his defeat to Young, I think that was why he was so fresh in his comeback. Liston wasn't credited with a comeback.
