Some guy was criticising boxing, saying in the Olympics why don't they just score fights like this: 1. broken nose 2. concussion 3. death and then went on to say how boxing is such a pointless sport, and why is it even in the Olympics.

What's your answer to this person, and probably many other critics?

I wouldn't waste my breath on the idiot.

You don't need to like something in order to appreciate it.

People have been punching each other longer than anyone can remember.

He should be shot in the head for his pointless remark.

Someone actually said this to me at work the other day, 99% sure it was because they know I do boxing and love the sport just to try and get a rise out of me.

My reaction "that's fine your entitled to your opinion" - With a big smile on my face.

Just carried on with my work.

I only tend to react to statements like that when there is the chance of the person talking **** influencing a group or at least a couple of other people to have a negative view of the sport.

If anything, Boxing is the only sport with applications beyond the ring. Sure, all sports at the top level require dedication and courage, but in boxing, you have to dominate another human being in combat with nothing but your hands, your heart, and the brains you got in your thick skull; all get tested in boxing like no other sport can. At it's core, boxing expresses the most savage and natural within each of us.

Ask your friend what the inherent point is to putting a ball through a hoop or getting from one end of a swimming pool to another.

    This.
Oh and my friend today told me that he prefers kickboxing because it involves the legs. "In boxing you just wail your arms".
"***** you dumb"(actual quote) is all i said.

Maybe he doesn't realize how much good boxing does. He doesn't realize that boxing is a martial art as well as a sport. Maybe he doesn't know that women and children have taken boxing lessons to avoid being victimized. Maybe he doesn't realize how many world class boxers help various charities. Or about the fitness that you can attain from boxing.
The people who criticize boxing don't understand it.

I would tell them they're too disconnected with nature if they can't even be interested in witnessing two men beat each other up with they fists.

I agree, all sports are pointless...
...except the javelin....so many useful applications for real life.

No, but in all seriousness, boxing like many other sports are based on survival skills that were at some point, useful. But the fact that we have evolved past the point that you don't need any athletic skills at all to be successful, does in fact suggest that all athletic competitions are worthless throwbacks to an earlier time in our evolution.
I guess the only point to athletic competition is entertainment, and that's it. Therefore, we can only assume that people who put down boxing, or any other sport for that matter are just close-minded and ignorant for suggesting that other people should only enjoy the same kind of entertainment that they like.
In conclusion, there is nothing you can say to change their behaviour, because if it's not boxing, it's guaranteed to be something else. Move on.
